Badass tropes - now on: Action Girl

Go To

Alright, so in TRS Badass Gay came up for discussion and it was agreed that there appears to big problem with the Badass X tropes in general, which needs to be sorted out until something can be ruled on for Badass Gay.

Here's a courtesy link: TRS page. And Badass page with its subtropes. You can also visit the sandbox page here.

Noted Problems include:

  • Tropes are just listings of characters people thing are badass who happen to have a certain trait. (The Badass + Trait Problem)
  • Badass X as a naming scheme is actually very vague and doesn't give a lot of insight into what the character trope actually is, assuming it is a trope.
  • Badass X as a naming scheme proliferates the use of Badass + Trait 'tropes'.

Suggested things to do include:

  • Make it a requirement that a badass character trope means a character is "badass because of a trait", or "badass in spite of a trait".
  • Renaming away from the Badass X naming scheme as much as possible.
  • Cut, redefine or re-purpose things that are just Badass + trait.

There are also a lot of tropes that seem to be valid character-types, but have the naming scheme 'Badass X', when there's more to the trope than that. There are also a lot of prop or event or whatever tropes that need to be gone through as well.

[up]&[up][up] Then it seems easy enough, just transplant Badass Longcoat to Longcoat Statement?

That makes it sound like the character is intentionally wearing a longcoat to try and look badass, when it's more usually an authorial decision.

Yeah, in the same vein as Cool Sword, Cool Hat, and other similarly named tropes.

That sounds like an easy fix. Let's do it. Get a crowner set up or whatever we need to do.

[up] Go to a page action crowner, change the crowner's title in the link, and then go to that link; the site will ask you if you want to create this crowner.

I noticed a lot of mixing with Rated M for Manly, Hot-Blooded and such too. Some exemples just talks about an exemple of an awesome moment. And just use randomly manly or badass in it

That's why badass is no longer a trope. Feel free to delete such wicks or examples.

Update on the wick cleaning process for Badass: we're now down from 17K wicks a few months ago to about 16K as of 10/07/16. Still got the majority to go through.

That's impressive; good news. We all knew this would take a while.

Now under 15K wicks because of the diligent work of many people.

This dewicking effort is picking up speed—we're already under 14K wicks right now.

You know, I must remember who came up with the not-so-smart idea of moving the definition of Badass to an analysis subpage. It just jars a little with the shortness of the current page.

I finally got around to making that crowner for Badass Longcoat: https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/crowner.php/SingleProposition/BadassLongcoat?open=all#5fifdhb4

Hopefully, I did it right. That's the first time I ever did a crowner.

I'm a bit wary about renaming 'Badass' to 'Cool' if only because the use of 'cool' suffers from similar problems to the use of 'badass'. I don't think 'Cool Longcoat' is going to emphasise the visual point about the long coat any better than the name 'Badass Longcoat' did. I can't think of anything better, however.

If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.

Likewise, I really don't think simply replacing "badass" with "cool" in Badass Longcoat will solve anything and will only result in a lot of wick cleaning work without any tangible results. The "Cool X" (Cool Shades, Cool Boat, etc.) tropes have their own problems with people just listing anything they find interesting in some way as a Zero Context Example.

In other news, Badass is now down to less than 12K wicks. Keep up the good work, people.

So, is Badass Longcoat the next trope under discussion?

Still don't think anything remarkable has happened re. contentious Badass Gay, but it has a discussion page so I'd opt for moving onto Badass Longcoat

Had no idea the Cool Tropes had some decay of their own.

Wow, this is stressful.

I thought the process was to come to agreement to change the name (single prop) and then decide on a lists of possible names. Badass —> Cool feels like lateral movement.

Badass is now down to less than 11K wicks—which means the dewicking effort is already 1/3 of the way through.

Fantastic! That's impressive stuff for a (former) trope as widely used as badass.

I want to know why the description is on an Analysis page, though. I see the crowner down there but it still comes off a unwieldy.
