Alright, so in TRS Badass Gay came up for discussion and it was agreed that there appears to big problem with the Badass X tropes in general, which needs to be sorted out until something can be ruled on for Badass Gay.
Here's a courtesy link: TRS page
. And Badass page with its subtropes. You can also visit the sandbox page here.
Noted Problems include:
- Tropes are just listings of characters people thing are badass who happen to have a certain trait. (The Badass + Trait Problem)
- Badass X as a naming scheme is actually very vague and doesn't give a lot of insight into what the character trope actually is, assuming it is a trope.
- Badass X as a naming scheme proliferates the use of Badass + Trait 'tropes'.
Suggested things to do include:
- Make it a requirement that a badass character trope means a character is "badass because of a trait", or "badass in spite of a trait".
- Renaming away from the Badass X naming scheme as much as possible.
- Cut, redefine or re-purpose things that are just Badass + trait.
There are also a lot of tropes that seem to be valid character-types, but have the naming scheme 'Badass X', when there's more to the trope than that. There are also a lot of prop or event or whatever tropes that need to be gone through as well.

Hm, I think we should remove Battle Strip. It's more closely tied to an action scene than a specific character type.
Fight smart, not fair.I agree with Deboss on Badass Transplant (and the image is fine) and Battle Strip; and Bald Of Awesome works as an indicator.
Do we want a specific subindex of indicators that show badassery is taking place imminently rather than a person?
Fight smart, not fair.Badass Native is paying a visit to the Trope Repair Shop.
Holy cow, triplepost.
"If you aren't him, then you apparently got your brain from the same discount retailer, so..." - Fighteer
While I admit the name is funny, that seems like an unnecessary trope given that we have Sociopathic Hero.
By the way, what's the protocol for discarding a YKTTW? I'd love to press the button on that Badasshole thing, but I don't know if there's a process for that or what.
"Did anybody invent this stuff on purpose?" - Phillip Marlowe on tequila, Finger Man by Raymond Chandler. No real protocol, as far as I know. Seeing as you have support too, nuke it.
"If you aren't him, then you apparently got your brain from the same discount retailer, so..." - FighteerI don't think the barrier is very high; discarded YKTTWs are easy enough to restore. If there is some consensus that it isn't going to go anywhere you are free to go, but complaining YKTTWs should come here
first.
Right, I meant next time I want to discard a complaining YKTTW.
"Did anybody invent this stuff on purpose?" - Phillip Marlowe on tequila, Finger Man by Raymond Chandler.Badass Blink has been taken to the TRS for unrelated reasons and is favoring a rename. It will likely lose both the badass and blink parts of the name.
Sweet. Guys, please remember to comment on all judgements, that way we have more than one dude giving impressions of a trope. Even just an "I agree" is good feedback for what's up with various tropes.
Next five.
- Beat Them at Their Own Game: When a badass beats you with your own special move. (establishment trope maybe?)
- Beware the Nice Ones: They're so sweet, they won't even hurt a fly. But they will hurt you, badly, if you piss them off. (contrast trope)
- Beware the Quiet Ones: They don't talk much. However, they will kick your ass if you take that as a sign of weakness. (contrast trope)
- Beware the Silly Ones: They're always goofing off. However, push the wrong button and they will destroy you, no questions asked. (contrast trope)
- Big Badass Bird of Prey: Birds of prey can be scary as hell, especially when they are large enough to flay your face in half in mid flight. (stock badass)
I don't think the first is a badass trope, even an establisher. I agree on the next three. As for the fourth, it seems more like something that's usually or at least occasionally just use as a symbol and thus I can't really consider it a Badass subtrope.
I also don't think the first qualifies as a badass trope. The middle three can stay as-is, I believe, but I'm not so sure about the last one. I mean, I'd bet that when most hear "birds of prey" they're not thinking of Polly the parrot or a dove.
All your safe space are belong to TrumpHey, sorry to derail this a bit, but since I posted a topic in the Badass Spaniard discussion page and you talked about that trope two pages back, I thought I might as well ask.
What exactly is the criteria for "Spaniard" for the purpose ofthat trope? Because the description implies it's for characters who associate themselves with Spain, but a lot of latino characters are listed under it, even those who more closely identify themselves with Mexico than Spain (and the trope description even states that an example shouldn't identify themselves as being from Mexico).
That is an interesting point. A lot Hollywood movies use Mexicans/Latinos as stand ins for Spaniards due to the fact that they speak Spanish. It's odd. That definitely needs a TRS, but for different reasons.
Fight smart, not fair. The first one is usually one of those Badass Moments type tropes a reversal of the situation by using the opponents own tactics and/or Super Move back at them.
Sparkling and glittering! Jan-Ken-Pon!Hm, the first can be used that way, but it doesn't have to be to my knowledge. It seems to be a common ability among protagonists in Shonen type things.
Fight smart, not fair. How else would you use it? Hell it was treated as badass as political or corporate maneuvers. (the trope as written though is more limiting than I first thought.)

Sparkling and glittering! Jan-Ken-Pon!It's not used to establish badassery, it's just something that badasses happen to do. It's a combat style. It seems related to Power Stealing.
Fight smart, not fair.

Badass Transplant has an okay description, although the examples may drift a bit. But it has a terrible image.
Badass Unintentional has a terrible description. It also seems to suffer from the same problem as Badass Princess. It's trying to be many tropes at once.
Badbutt looks alright.
Bald Of Awesome is trying to be a contrast trope, but I suspect the examples have decayed to he's badass, but he accidentally happens to be bald, too.
Battle Strip looks related to The Coats Are Off and Harbinger of Asskicking.
