Badass tropes - now on: Action Girl

Go To

Alright, so in TRS Badass Gay came up for discussion and it was agreed that there appears to big problem with the Badass X tropes in general, which needs to be sorted out until something can be ruled on for Badass Gay.

Here's a courtesy link: TRS page. And Badass page with its subtropes. You can also visit the sandbox page here.

Noted Problems include:

  • Tropes are just listings of characters people thing are badass who happen to have a certain trait. (The Badass + Trait Problem)
  • Badass X as a naming scheme is actually very vague and doesn't give a lot of insight into what the character trope actually is, assuming it is a trope.
  • Badass X as a naming scheme proliferates the use of Badass + Trait 'tropes'.

Suggested things to do include:

  • Make it a requirement that a badass character trope means a character is "badass because of a trait", or "badass in spite of a trait".
  • Renaming away from the Badass X naming scheme as much as possible.
  • Cut, redefine or re-purpose things that are just Badass + trait.

There are also a lot of tropes that seem to be valid character-types, but have the naming scheme 'Badass X', when there's more to the trope than that. There are also a lot of prop or event or whatever tropes that need to be gone through as well.

Have we removed the above? I can't find the sandbox. We had a sandbox, right?

Alright, I moved the first four on the indicators list, and Badass Mustache to the fix list. If anyone feels it should be different, feel free to change it.

Next bunch:

  • Badass Native: When the natives are restless and scrotum crushingly badass. (the description might need tweaking. Half of it doesn't seem to have anything to do with badass)
  • Badass Normal: The non-powered character in a group with superpowers, but who kicks just as much ass. (Contrast trope).
    • Badass Abnormal: When said ordinary, already badass person gains the power to shoot lightning bolts out of their hands and punch intangible deities in the balls. (Not sure)
  • Badass on Paper: A rare breed where the character can do badass things with out being badass. (This one seems a bit confusing)
  • Badass Pacifist: Won't hurt you, but will fearlessly sacrifice their lives to keep you from hurting others. (Contrast trope).

I think Badass Native is a trope, but it's more about the people than a person and thus not a Badass trope.
Badass Normal is definitely a trope however I suspect it really needs cleanup.
Badass Abnormal is a trope, but I don't think it's a proper badass trope. It's more of a plot trope.
Badass on Paper is a trifle confusing, but I suspect it's covered elsewhere.
Badass Pacifist is a trope, however, if we are defining a badass as someone who can handle themselves in a fight, it is probably not exactly a subtrope of that.

Whoever created the sandbox created it on Sandbox.Badass Tropes for some reason. I can redirect Sandbox.Badass to it if you want.

Badass Normal is definitely a trope. Badass Abnormal sounds more like a plot event, rather than a character trope. Badass Native seems like a stock stereotypical type of badass, but its got a bunch of other traits tacked on, probably needs a chainsawing. Badass on Paper seems like it's not related to badass that much. It feels like something we've got, maybe something involving legends being blown out of proportion and preceding a character? Badass Pacifist is not a badass trope, it's an Actual Pacifist who can back it up.

Do we need a TRS thread for Badass Native, in order to broaden/chainsaw it, or can we do that without TRS?

I'd say put it on the list. It needs tweaking, but I'm not sure if it's really supposed to be about an individual or about how natives are badasses. There's a distinction there.

So, put it aside on the fix list?

Yeah. We ready for the next group of five?

Out of these five, it seems we agree that only Badass Normal is an actual trope, while the rest are covered elsewhere/need fixing/need removing from the index. Is that how we will move them?

The rest require some sort of cleanup or redefinition, yes. It's not that Badass Abnormal isn't a trope, for example, it's that it's a plot trope, not a character trope.

Oh, and technically Badass Normal probably needs cleanup, but that's way down on the list of priorities.

I wasn't sure what to do with Badass on Paper and Badass Pacifist, so someone else can move them instead of me.

Neeext:

  • Badass Preacher: He will minister to his flock, and break you in half with his shepherd's crook if you think about hurting them. (Contrast trope)
  • Badass Princess: She is not one to get kidnapped. Instead, she breaks kidnappers in half. (I suspect this will have a lot of overlap with Badass Damsel. Also, looks like Action Girl but more sopecific).
  • Badass Santa: Santa kicks ass.
  • Badass Spaniard: Hispanic is just another word for "you will know what true fear means now". (Uh, is there such a stereotype?)
  • Badass Teacher: Teaches the alphabet to kids, and brutally schools the fools who take them on.

[up]Badass on Paper needs a rename.

As for the above, Badass Preacher is a contrast trope. I still don't understand what Badass Damsel is supposed to be, but Badass Princess doesn't sound too similar to it - it's probably a subtrope of Action Girl, as you say. Badass Santa is also a contrast trope, and Badass Teacher might be, although it actually sounds more like the teaching equivalent of Mama Bear.

And as far as Badass Spaniard goes, I think there is a specific stereotype of the "Spanish Swashbuckler" that it could be reworked into.

Badass Princess seems to be covered by a bunch of other tropes. Lady of War, Royals Who Actually Do Something, Rebellious Princess.

  • Badass Preacher: I'm not sure this is really a trope. Is there more to it than clergyman who happens to be a badass?
  • Badass Princess: It's a trope, I think, but the description needs work. Actually I'm not entirely sure what this does need.
    • It does appear to overlap with several other tropes. I think it wants to be Badass Damsel, but actually isn't. It also wants to be Lady of War.
  • Badass Santa: I'll give it a pass. It's kind of like a stock badass type based on the absurdity of the idea.
  • Badass Spaniard: As brought up in the original TRS thread, this is actually a stock character type, however, the name doesn't indicate that and thus invites misuse. Rename it.
  • Badass Teacher: I don't really know. This may be another stock character type, but if so I think maybe we should do the same thing to it that we do to Badass Spaniard.

Badass Teacher really sounds like it's related to Mama Bear/Papa Bear more then anything else, which leads me to feel that it should be removed from the index.

I'd like to move onto the next group of five, but we don't have much agreement on which tropes get put on which list.

[up][up] A Lady of War does not have to be and rarely is an actual princess. As well as a Badass Princess takes the Plucky Girl route, Rebellious Princess or 12 other tropes that don't really require them to be badass/action girl or such.

I would rename it to Action Princess or something it is a contrast to meek Princess Classic (and/or Faux Action Girl.)

In Dog Days you have the two types at war with each other Badass Princess vs Princess Classic, the Princess Classic calls for a hero to protect her kicking off the plot.

Either way, we need to kill the Badass from Badass Princess and make it look less like a mishmash salad of other tropes.

Should we start bringing things to TRS, so they don't all come up in the end together, or should we wait?

We should probably bring something that we definitely agree isn't a trope like Badass Furry if we want to move things along. Quick and easily dealt with.
