Penelope will continue undoing the legacies of the Cooper clan.

And she will even undo Sly's by taking away the fact that he's the Cooper that destroyed Clockwerk once and for all. And as a result.

she will also stop Bentley from getting crippled and Nyla from becoming Clockla
Though I can't decide if either one would be intentional.

[up]You just came up with a far more compelling motivation than the game itself bothered to do.

Think about it: Penelope cares a lot about Bentley, right? What if she wanted to reverse the damage he suffered at the hands of Clock-La? After all, it wouldn't affect her meeting Bentley, since the Cooper Vault job was independent of that. However, she knows Bentley would STILL not approve of messing with time like that, and she had to build a superior version of the time machine (one that did NOT require antiques to function, as shown in the game) behind his back. So, she would join Le Paradox, who has money and resources to do so. The game already implies she didn't care much for him and his petty revenge. So, she could plan to double-cross him and use the time machine to interfere with the events of Sly 2, being increasingly driven and obsessive to do so, with the gang being put in the difficult position to stop her.

......okay, the motive is still problematic and kind of a rip-off from "A Crack in Time" and a bunch of other similar time travel stories. But less jarring than LO Lmonyanwapons

So, I finished Thieves in Time today. Some thoughts:

Sanzaru Games has gotten the gameplay down well. It feels and looks like Original Sly Trilogy game, in good and in bad. One thing I should specifically praise is featuring the ancestors as fully playable characters. I've always felt that multiple PC's in Sly games have been a bit of a double-edged sword: on one hand, I like the variety, but at least to me the other characters ofter feel very limited when compared to Sly's acrobatics. Using the ancestors gives you the variety without limiting the Parkour antics. The Costume mechanics were surprisingly fun (excluding the Sabretooth Fur). I was positively surprised that posing as the Samurai General did not recquire those ungodly annoying "Alto-Alto-Bass-Tenor" -style passwords. The enviroments look better and feel bigger, and the Mook designs were nice. I especially liked the Mecha-Wolves and the usage of extinct animals as guards in the Ice Age level. I like the return of the clue bottles and treasures, as well as the addition of the collectable masks, even though they will cause some sleepless nights hunting the Last Lousy Point. More varied Hacking also was a nice surprise. Only complain about this aspect is that I think every segment is somewhat shorter than in Sly 3, for example. I also think there was less jobs overall, and you were more forced to play the jobs in certain order, whereas the last game gave us three missions to choose from simultaneously. Not a big flaw, but it feels a bit restrictive.

The story: Well... First off, the setup is great, though that was achievement of Sly 3. I like the the main plot, but like everyone, I have few things that felt less than great.

As someone already mentioned, the writing. Compared to last games, too many times I felt like they tried to be funny. There were some great lines that made me laugh, but in overall it felt lackluster, even though the other games weren't flawless either. The fact that the game restricts the order you complete the jobs more severely than the earlier games makes another writing flaw conspicuous: the jobs in overall feel much less coherent towards the main Caper of the episode than before. Sometimes it feels like you're not really knowing how doing X will help you towards the general goal, and glaringly the game doesn't always know it either. Sometimes the justification is just "hey, this thing here seems to be important to the bad guy, let's do some sabotaging!"

The Villains in overall were a mixed bag. El Jefe had a cool, menacing design and suprisingly epic boss battle for a Warm-Up Boss. Although I was left a bit uncertain what his plan was in Feudal Japan, other than the Cane Swap, of course. Toothpick... eh. His design was a bit weird, and while some of his antics were fun, overall I think he was a bit annoying. And I hated his boss battle. Why'd he has to bounce around when he could've rolled? He's a FREAKING ARMADILLO! The Grizz felt like a bad rehash of Dimitri: Gangster who speaks incomprehensible Jive Turkey and has a grudge against the Art world due to the negative response he got. At this point it also felt that more the game progressed, the less competent the antagonists felt like. He did have his moments, though. That Ice-Skating thing came out of nowhere but man, was it funny.

Penelope. I was not a big fan of her in general, so I'm not raging on the internet because of her betrayal. However, I think the handling of it was a bit... clumsy. Her motives come out of nowhere with a little to nothing foreshadowing, and in the end it feels kind of forced. It could have been a good twist, but now it merely comes off as a Shocking Swerve. This right here shows that in the end Sanzaru Games is Running the Asylum and essentially made Penelope Ron the Death Eater. However, this does not ruin the whole game for me. Despite my dislike towards the character I like how they left the Sequel Hook for her, so Sanzaru Games can try to make the whole thing seem like more sensible solution in the future. Ms. Decibel was a variable mix. On the other hand, she had a reason to be in the time period she is in and actually contributes to the main plot with the forgeries. Her design felt a bit weird, especially the fact that she wore nothing than the Fur Coat, but it was something you got used to and in the end she didn't look bad. Her Boss Battle on Le Paradox's Blimp Hangar was the Best Boss Ever. And finally: Le Paradox. I liked his skunk design and his general appearance and motifs. They way it reflected to his rat goons and their smoke grenades was also a clever foreshadowing of his species. In overall he was a good villain with fun mannerisms and a great French Jerk attitude to boot. I think he should've died taking that fall, though. Would've served him right.

The ending was.. eh, okay. It felt a bit too similar to the ending Sly 3, though this time Sly had actually disappeared instead of just faking amnesia and retiring. The sequel hooks weren't bad, and I don't mind the fact that the fifth Sly game will be most likely called Thieves in Time 2. I actually look forward seeing more ancestors and time periods. I wish Dimitri and Clockwerk have actual roles in that game though.

I have spoken. A wall of text, it would seem.

FINALLY got to play the game. I'm up to Medieval England, and I have been enjoying it so far. The gameplay takes a bit to get used to, but it's fun once you manage to. The graphics look good, the larger environments are great, and the ancestors so far are fun.

I do think they need more mission coherence. Also, some of the contrivances, like the Ice Age that JUST SO HAPPENS to have a Le Paradox henchman, which SO CONVENIENTLY leads to Medieval England are annoying. Also, the dialogue can be a bit cliche. The other games had this too, but not as frequently.

going by the trailer, it certainly has the tone of the games. but Sly, Bentley and Murray are so Off-Model it's hard to focus on anything else. the plot seems to be based off the first game in the series, so that's a good start.

I heard a rumor that Kevin Miller wasn't approached to voice in this movie. Based on the trailer, it sounds like he's been Darrin'd by Ian James Corlett.

This makes some sense, since Rainmaker studios (also behind the Ratchet & Clank movie) are based in Vancouver, and have worked with Ian before.

It looked good in motion. The only complaint I have is that they didn't get Sly's normal VA, but I'm sure that can be properly arranged by the time another trailer comes out.
