For those who don't know, the National Film Registry is a list of (American) films considered "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" so that they can be preserved in the Library of Congress. There is a TV Tropes listing of titles and their appropriate Wiki pages here.

The newly-added titles can be found here.

A variety of styles were chosen this year so many should be pleased. I'm happy for The Lost Weekend being included. It features a melodramatic yet remarkably haunting and even expressionistic depiction of alcoholism. A great moment in 1940s American cinema, and it'd be one of the first I'd use against a typical Internet "cinema didn't exist before Star Wars because it was black and white and racist" argument. Not that that I'm trying to be stereotypical and ideological there, heheheh, hmm.

Any thoughts?

All the new inductees are great choices but there are still some films that deserve a spot on there (unfortunately my brain cannot bring up any examples at the moment.)

It took them this long to add Bambi, Forrest Gump and Silence of the Lambs????

Looking for some stories?

I think the requirement is that the films be a certain age, so that's why they always have old movies. But don't quote me on that.

It says they have to be at least ten I think.

Yeah, Do The Right Thing got added in its first year of eligibility, and that wasn't nearly as influential as Bambi is.

You can't even write racist abuse in excrement on somebody's car without the politically correct brigade jumping down your throat!

[up] It was one of the first examples of DIY filmmaking and it is used as a textbook example on making a quality film with next to nothing. Much of independent cinema today comes from films such as El Mariachi.

Sorry if I sound like an idiot, but does Nicholas Roeg's Home Movies mean Nicholas Roeg's home movies?

Roeg is a master of visuals. Those home movies were probably the blueprint for Dont Look Now or The Witches.
