[up][up] Well an English version does exist and people have been playing it.

Speaking of, even with the Geofront work getting closer, decided to bite the bullet and play the leaked patch. I really do like the art style, it's like a grittier improvement on Sky's visuals.

Playing my first Trails game. Trails of Cold Steel. I'm enjoying it a lot.

Did you seriously just bait two of your students into trying to assault you so that you could kick the shit out of them, Sara?

I think you did. Gonna pull a Nanoha on these bastards.

I like how she roped Rean into this too. Rean was minding his own damn business, not involved in this argument WHATSOEVER. And then when these two chucklenuts get into the grill of their godlike teacher, she's like "Oh, come over here and help them out Rean. I'll fight all three of you."

And then proceeds to annihilate them all in one hit. Just rains death from the sky. What did Rean do to deserve that? XD

I'm still not sure how Trails of Cold Steel III is going to be received. Even setting aside that we're missing two whole games, if it digs too deep into characters and plot points from Sky or Zero/Ao, it might alienate players who only played Cold Steel. Which seem to be the majority.

[up][up]That basically sums up Rean's whole existence.

[up]As far as I've seen, they do at least try to give basic summaries for all of the characters. At least in Cold Steel III. IV is another story but I don't know how it's handled there.

From what I've gathered, III doesn't dig so deeply into the Crossbell duology that one wouldn't be able to understand if one only played the Erebonia games.

IV, meanwhile, being the Infinity War/Endgame of the first half of the whole Trails series, pretty much pulls all the stops and expects you to have played all the games up to that point.

[up]Yeah, that's gonna be a problem. I don't think most players are gonna want to play 8 different games just to understand that one. Or at the very least go out of their way to play the other subseries.

Nevermind that one of them isn't out here yet.

It doesn't help that Sky alone still leaves a major character arc unfinished until Zero.

[up]x5 I wouldn't be too worried.

I played 3 and 4 in Japanese with a relatively limited understanding of the language using google translate without having played Ao or Zero or looked up spoilers for it.

I'd been familiar with the overall concept (set in Crossbell, protagonists are a special police unit, games wrap up Joshua, Estelle and Renne's story, and that it involved the mirage Septerrion.) through offhand mentions here but nothing more specific than that.

The characters are introduced well enough that nothing was ever too confusing; you could tell these characters had a history with each other but over all it just felt like they were introducing new characters with a shared backstory. As soon as it became plot relevant the backstory was relayed to those unfamiliar with it and thus to the player as well so it all felt fairly natural.

In addition there's a story synopsis in the menus; I never translated the whole thing cause there was too much text so I don't know how I depth it was but I think it included stuff on the Crossbell arc.

Wasn't there a bell somewhere in Cold Steel 1/2 as well?

I'm pretty sure there was one in the Eisenritter castle.

I guess they'll probably go into that in III/IV.

I lack a PS 4.

And despite how very tempting it is to purchase one just for Cold Steel III... That's probably a bit of a waste.

So, I'll probably drop out of this thread a bit until a PC release to avoid spoilers.

After the full game is out, because I do want to find out if the translation is still good.

From what reports have said about the demo, it's more literal than Xseed's work and isn't quite the same, but the terms and character quirks are still there. Our resident red-haired sword boy still says "short stuff".

One of Juna's lines is apparently "Tell me, does one of your fancy sword moves involve pulling your head out of your ass?" and while I don't know what the line was originally, that was enough to sell me on the localization.

[up][up]I'll reserve judgement till I've played it but that doesn't quite seem to fit Juna's character; the snarkiness fits but at least out of context it comes across as meaner than I remember her being.

It could also be down to her using a level of rudeness in Japanese that's subtle enough I didn't catch it.

Regardless it's probably close enough that her characterization will be less of an issue for me than her voice.
