Persepolis is a pretty interesting autobiography, with the rise of Iran's Islamic theocracy as the backdrop.

Ah, yes, forgot about that one. I've seen the film, which was impressive. I'll check the comic sometime.

American Vampire: Scott Snyder really did his research, as it's a surprisingly good Historical Fiction series as well as a kickass vampire series. If you don't mind a little more fiction than history, this would be a great read.

I've always been interested in history, especially modern history. Also, I like comics - mostly French and Belgian ones most of you may not be familiar with, but still. It's merely logical, then, that I'd like to read some good comics about modern history.
The problem is, I don't know too many of these. I've heard about Maus and Barefoot Gen, and I have a vague feeling that there must be more out there, but that is all.
So, can anyone who knows this genre better than I do, recommend me some comic books about modern Real Life history? It's especially war I find interesting - be it World War One, the Spanish Civil War or The Vietnam War - but "peaceful" suggestions are welcome as well.
Thanks a bunch in advance!
