I'm having a tough time deciding how to introduce Bright Idea with her debut story. I want it to be a simple piece introducing her character and establishing some of her quirks.

Should I just go straight to her running her lighting store/machine shop from a modified wagon?

The X-chromosome carries about 5-percent of all the genetic material in a cell, or about a thousand genes. The Y-chromosome carries a third of that raw material, and is only carrying about 100 genes.

This isn't guys getting screwed over; this is science.

Way more information here.

Magic A is Magic A. Need rules to establish what Magic A is, and how to bind it so that different authors can tell the story without running all over the map, and ending up with Magic B all of a sudden.

Or would you like this to be like Star Wars Expanded Universe, where authors end up using the medium to bash other authors?

Yeah, canon-wise, it's a female-dominated society, so it seems. (^ Gotta make up stuff when canon is silent, though)

I'm not bothered by this at all.

So, how woudl Bright Idea factor into this foil thing? Side character? Support role? Possible romantic interest with one of the Others?

I reckon Bri would mostly factor as an unfortunate pony who gets entangled in their misadventures, although she might have gadgets they could appreciate.

Hmm, perhaps her first trip out would be to raise funds for her pet projects by selling tactical hoofshoes like what she made for herself. Cue her learning how to sell her wares over a time period. Maybe she might even make a friend or two :3

edit: Men are from Cybertron, Women are from Equestria? The girls have it lucky, they don't lose their culture from a seriously bad case of Forever War.

Aaaaaaaanyway.

Thoughts on Eta Carinae the Third and his magic-accentuation/attenuation techniques? Like I said, this isn't new stuff, just unearthed from his research in the School and professorship at the School after he graduated. He since retired and devoted the remainder of his lifespan into self-study of the phenomena, free from whatever constraints he may have had while a professor, and botched up making replicas of the EoH.

Can't make Loyalty, Honesty, Laughter, Generosity or Kindness by purely mechanical means.

Moonbeam would have a blast in the lab, I bet, even if just to read the old tomes that Eta has acquired.

(derp, spelled Carinae wrong.)

[up]He seems like an interesting character and would make a great mentor to Moonbeam and the others. I wanted to ask a few questions about him though (pardon me if you answered them else where).

Why did he seek to create replicas of the Elements of Harmony? How many ponies knew about them (if any)? How protective of his work is he (if at all)? What is his relationship with the rest of Hoofington?

@PVT: There's a bit of a difference between "It's the mother's chromosomes that determine the gender" and "the mother chooses what race the baby is". In the former, which genetic material ends up in the kids' genes is still pretty random.

Besides, I have to agree that I really don't give a crap about how Real Life genetics works in regard to the ponies. It's a completely different world and there's no reason why it would work the same way. That and I think the alternative theory is just cooler and allows for more freedom in the storytelling.

Just wanted to respond to some earlier points about Chuckles:

1. Because he needs body contact to actually summon the object, he can't create an object in the distance. So he can magic up an invisible ball in his hooves, but he can't summon a wall 20 feet away.

2. Disbelief and skepticism in his act are his kriptonite. With a heckler in his presence, it's harder for him to make it work. However, belief in his act , and encouraging suggestions actually make it easier for him. So if his friends start saying picture that red ball, oh look I can see the sports logo etc, he can summon these things with half the effort.

My fanfic outline. RIP Posey

Okay, here goes, shoot this down with Triple-A if it doesn't work. Or use a wrench if it can be tweaked.

So, he's this star pupil, right? Gifted, gets accepted into the School, does very well. Graduates with honors, goes on to take a teaching position at the school after doing some post-doctorate stuff or whatever Ponies do with secondary learning.

He's done loads of research on the old myths, and knew that the return of Nightmare Moon was coming, soon. Most likely within his lifetime. Not knowing where the Elements were at, he decides to make them. This is his descent into pride. He's a gifted unicorn, and he knows this. Think Twilight with elements of Rainbow Dash mixed in for flavoring, when he was younger.

Only it doesn't work. One, he's not destined for this, and two, you can't manufacture an Element and expect it to work.

So, as an Elderly Stallion, with his whole life seemingly wasted on this errand, he watches Twilight Sparkle ascend to do the very thing he felt he should've done. The Legend of Nightmare Moon consumed his entire adult life, and now it's been fulfilled without any input from him at all. He feels, somewhat correctly, that he's wasted his life.

This makes him withdraw fully into his house and lab, and he's been there ever since. To this day, he fails to understand that it was never his destiny to wield the Element of Magic. He's more of a scribe, a researcher, than an expert magic-user. Sure, he can wield magic, but his real strength is in inferring connections bwtween things - conecting dots, doing the research, putting two and two together, compiling, collecting, figuring things out. To that end, he has a very extensive library filled with copies of the old works, and gobs of carefully cataloged notes and draft papers about those works.

Luna may steer Moonbeam his way to help him get over the bitterness he harbors in his heart. Perhaps She feels the bitterness he harbors, even from a distance.

Bitterness that She is all-too-familiar with.

No one else knows that he tried to recreate the Elements, only that he sequestered himself in his house for years after retirement, coming out only for grocery shopping and brief errands. He's a hermit living in the middle of Hoofington. All alone in a crowd.

He's protective of his works, but not overly so, if the inquisitive pony asking questions is a Unicorn. He will have little patience with Pegasi and Earth ponies, though.

How's that sound?

Pony genetics: I'll bow out of that facet, then.

Possible double post and dump question:

Luna will be corresponding to Moonbeam via his dragon familiar, yes?

I was thinking that Luna could occasinally implant suggestions and thoughts into his head via long-distance (or short-distance for the potential "this looks like stalking, doesn't it?" factor) telepathy.

Her voice would sounds like a whisper, but in such a way that it's deafaning in his mind - can't blot it out no matter the external stimuli or how much "lalala I can't hear you" he tries.

—-

There, the red door, The Whisper said again. He shook his head as if to shake the thought loose from his brain. It was loud. It was a Mare's voice, spoken in a whisper, but it carried with it an air of authority and power. His eyes caught the sight of a small red door.

"Okay, now what-" he began to ask.

Knock three times, and ask to see Professor Carinae. it commanded.

"Professor who?" he asked. The name was vaugly familiar, but he couldn't place a hoof on it.

You do not remember him, do you? Unimportant; do as I have commanded. All shall be made clear.

Reluctantly, he knocked. He considered knocking a fourth time, but thought better of it. Whoever was playing tricks with his head would know better-

You are correct. You show great promise, young one.

[up][up]Hmm. . .I do like where your going with him. Now a few more (that is if you don't mind). How would he react to someone with knowledge of the false elements he has created ? Has he completely given up on his past works or could he return to them with a little "incentive". If couldn't tell already I'm trying to work a story idea out of this.

[up]I would leave that only for emergencies. Then again it would be incharacter fro Luna to just barge into someone's head to deliver a message.

I think The Whisper woudl be initially used to draw Moonbeam into Her plot. After that, there would be reliance on using the dragon fledgling as an e-mail provider, smiliar to Spike.

Eta will not disclose the failed projects right away. Fear that someone may attempt to use them, blah blah blah. Hence why he keps them in his attenuation chamber; you can't even detect them. To a Unicorn, it woudl be like seeing a room with no light at all coming from it. You shine a light in there, and it just swallows it up. So it would be with magical exertion, trying reach out with their magical abilities.

—-

He reached out, his horn dimly glowing. He could see the amulet with his eyes through the small window in the door, but he coudln't see it - or anything else in the small room - with his mind. It was as if he was looking at an illusion, a trick of the light, a painting. Yet, bobbing his head from side to side, it was there, tangible, real.

"What sort of trickery is this?" he asked the aged Unicorn.

"Attenuation cage. No magic can get past it, despite you being able to see it. Pretty wizard, yes?" the old one stated, beaming.

Moonbeam clumbsily pressed the door release lever and it swung open slowly. At once, he could see the contents of the room with his mind.

"See? You broke the connections that the door made with the rest of the room. Shut the door and it'll be a black hole again. And if you really want to freak out, go stand in there for a bit."

"Why, what happens then?"

"You're used to seeing things with your mind and with your eyes. Ever wonder what it would be like to see things with just your eyes alone?"

[up]So what you are saying is that it would be impossible for anyone to be able to know about the false elements, even hints that he was working on them at all? Hmm. . .I see.

The thing is I was trying to do was see if I could work the introduction of a villainous organization and an antagonist characters. the idea being that they are aware of his knowledge and want to get him working on advanced magics again (hey they might even help him realizes his old goals!).

Am I the only guy getting Wonka vibes from Eta?

How long has Eta been retired? If it was fairly recently I would think that his name would still be mentioned at the school. If it's been far too long for that to happen why would his name ring a bel with Moonbeam?

Off topic but, Eta makes me think of Meta witch leads me to Legend of Legaia.

We can adjust as needed. This is the workshop, after all.

I think he would've been retired shortly after Moonbeam (and Twilight) started schooling. Moonbeam would remember him after being introduced, as 'that eccentric old professor up in room 428' or something.

It's possible that Eta had an assistant - old scholarly colleage, promising post-graduate student - helping him with the lab.

Perhaps this assistant is part of this shadow organization, as well. So yeah, some knowledge of what he was doing may be known outside of his lab, as he thinks his research is safely kept by his old assistant, who moved on to other things when the Elements failed to work properly. Yeah, let's run with that.

I hadn't thought of the Wonka angle, actually. He's not looking for a sucessor, if that's what you mean, and the lab isn't all that vast.

He's waiting to die.

—-

"But why do I need to talk to the old professor, anyway? And for another matter, to whom am I conversing with?" he asked, standing beside the door.

The Professor believes that he is of no worth to the Kingdom any longer. You are to prove him wrong. And until you prove your worth to Us, We shall not reveal Our identity. Consider that to be your motivating factor, young one.

[up]Yes. Lets run with that. The assistant doesn't even really need any malevolent motives. He may just have joined one of the organizations projects simply because of the promise of great things and he wants Eta to join him because he doesn't want to see him waste away.

It seems that this takes place before Moonbeam meet the other five, but has he already meet Luna somehow?

On a different subject I was trying to compile information on the Other Six's families and this is what I have managed to come up with.

Moonbeam: Has a large number of siblings, and is the middle child. His father is dead.

Chuckles: Orphaned. The mime troupe he was a member of acted as a surrogate family.

Pig Iron: He is a member of a high class family from Manehatten but does not interact with them.

Big Rig: His family still lives up north?

Smoke Screen: Possible military background?

Check Up: Umm. . .?

So yeah, is there anything I missed or any ideas of where to fill the holes.
