Sexy new way to boost forum coolness. (The Herald Thread)

Go To

We're going to appoint people in each of the subforums to welcome newbies in by an automated PM and show them how things work in the particular subforum.

The appointment thing is so that at least one person knows it is their job, and so the newbie doesn't get buried under a PM onslaught the first time they post.

We will give the appointee (now called Heralds) a spiffy icon badge so people will know they are on the job for everybody. There will also be access to a report that shows who is new in the subforum.

If you want to apply for the position, all you have to do is post a welcome draft here. That way, a moderator will consider you. If someone else has already applied for the position, don't worry! Multiple people can apply for one subforum.

This is a list of the heralds that have already been appointed and the subforums that still need heralds. Positions that are labeled as being held by "TVTropes" are vacant along with positions that are blank.

Well, Lu, if you insist, can you please edit this paragraph:

The Video Games subforum is the place where we, obviously, talk about video games. It does not matter whether that game is "hardcore" or "casual", mainstream or niche, awesome or terrible; if it's a video game, then it's all good to talk about. Our main goal is a simple one: talk with others about video games and have fun doing it.

In light of the new Directory thread in Special Efforts, could the second and third paragraph of my PM ("The stickied threads . . . . specific cleanup efforts") please be changed to the following?

Threads which deal with widespread issues and efforts (such as natter, the Playing With wiki, and the namespace migration) are listed in the directory thread. The other threads deal with specific cleanup efforts.

As we seem to be lacking a herald for content violations, I thought I might forward myself for the position. I have a draft prepared, but it is perhaps a little long as I felt the need to clearly explain the rules, standards, protocol and expectations.

Hello, [[troper]] and welcome to the Content Violations forum. This section of the forums is dedicated to the cleanup of pages focus on overly lewd works and those that sexualize children with our aims stated in full here. Due to the sensitive and occasionally controversial nature of the discussions at hand, we have some basic ground rules to cover and information to provide.

  1. The forum is not run directly by the moderation or administration. Instead, we have five panel members called the P5, an acronym of debatable meaning. There are five members on this panel: Catalogue, Discar, Komodin, Meeble and tdgoodrich1. Please refrain from contacting them directly unless it is urgent or they request it.
  2. We are focused on the judgement of works deemed to be porn or pandering to pedophiles. We view the distinction between pedophilia and drawn children to be irrelevant to our aims here. We are not interested in series that are merely high in fanservice or gorn, though those can play a role in decisions made by the P5 members. Pages are flagged via a button within the tools section on the left side of pages. We ask that you not abuse this function as we have enough work to do as it is and the moderation can see who tagged what pages. Works that have been rated as acceptable for teens or officially licensed for distribution to said teens are generally given a free pass when it comes to our work here, though there may be rare exceptions. If you feel a work is not rated properly by our criteria, you will need to clearly state why.
  3. The P5 loosely defines porn as being works that have little merit other than causing titillation and arousal. A work has to be rather questionable to qualify for this. Pedopandering, the term most commonly used for the other aspect of what we do here tends to be judged far more harshly. We have a zero tolerance policy in this respect. This means no sex involving children unless condemned, no depictions of sex meant for titillation and a harsh eye for excessive fanservice. Apparent children qualify for this as well. Really 700 Years Old is not an acceptable excuse.
  4. A work either fails or passes when it has received three votes either way, after which it will be placed in the P5 decisions and announcements thread. The angel of nonporno blesses a work and the devilhead condemns it to the pits. Do note, however, that not everything voted upon is either allowed to go entirely free or be sent directly to the cutlist. An overly prurient work may have cleaner adaptations the page may be restricted to and an article that attracts too much unpleasant editing can simply be locked to normal editing.
  5. If a thread has been deemed "P5 only" in the title, we mean it. Posts will be thumped. If you have important information to bring up, please take it to the main thread.
  6. Remember to keep things civil. Failure to abide by common rules of polite conversation and disruptive behavior can and will get you removed from the forum. We do not need abuse of the P5 members or the system itself, which is stressful enough as it is. Thus, it is in everyone's best interests (yours included) if you can maintain a respectful attitude even if you do not agree with the work that is being done. Overt hostility does nothing for any cause you may have.
  7. Finally, the P5 forum is not a soapbox. We are not interested in discussing the policy, which has been debated thoroughly. Please leave your opinions at the door.

For those of you who wish to make a specific appeal or condemnation for a work that is being judged, please remember to check the following areas for information. Things will likely go much more smoothly this way.

  1. The Post Links Thread is dedicated to chronicling debate and arguments over works and is split into two main sections for works that are still being judged and those that have been finished. Works that have finished discussion may be brought up for further debate in Page Restorations, but please remember that unless new information is provided the decision is unlikely to be overturned and the appeal may be thrown out immediately.
  2. Content Violation Reports keeps a track of everything that has been tagged. Resolved works are noted in a section that can be found in the upper right.
  3. P5 Decisions and Announcements also keeps track of works that have been reviewed as well as their resolution. If you wish to provide information regarding an H game/visual novel a form is provided at the bottom.
  4. Content Policy Discussion covers anything regarding questions or debate regarding the current P5 policy as outlined above.

Finally, before posting, make sure to check out our directory.

Once again, welcome to Content Violations and may your stay here be a constructive and pleasant one. If you have any questions, please let me know and I will be happy to answer them.

I'll give a bit of feedback, wait a mo.

  1. Drop the link to the rules down to the 6th paragraph.
  2. Lolicon should not be mentioned. It has several meanings that aren't pertinent to the content policy.
  3. I think of leaving out hebephilia as it will create confusion about fanservice aimed at teens.
  4. You need to tell them that they should read through the directory thread in Wiki Talk before posting.
  5. A link to the GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS post is lacking.
  6. Porn is a better term than Pornography as the latter often applies to just one sex scene.
  7. Both the rating exceptions and the "fanservice of teens for teens" things need mentioning, methinks.

I can't say more as my lappie is really hot and I can barely touch it.

Updated. Thank you for the feedback. I actually meant to edit out 'Lolicon' from the draft in the first place.

That looks really good. The only tweak I'd suggest is to change 5 to 'If a thread has been deemed "P5 only" (noted in the title), we mean it.'

Only possible change I could see is a link to the Administrivia.Five P page in 1 where you explain who and what we are. Other than that, looks good.

^^ Hm, I put it in, but I have the feeling if you put in too many links explaining things people might not be inclined to read them or the message itself. The information also seems to be contained within the message I put together.

Two notes, though:

  • Can I have a herald badge?
  • The herald icon isn't showing up for me or Telcontar in our respective subforums.

Cool. While you are there (asking for the herald icon), can you tell him to expand the bot to thread creation as well as thread posting? I figure this is going to be a big issue here in FAQ.

The thread creation thing isn't completely an issue with the bot; it's not registered as posting, so new accounts can get around the restrictions on timing and such.

That was the amazing part. Things just keep going.

For the record:https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/posts.php?discussion=13354559670A21820100&page=1#1

I'd suggest to attach it twice, first after the first sentence of the 4th paragraph: "A work either fails or passes when it has received three votes either way, after which it's listed in the [[https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/posts.php?discussion=13354559670A21820100&page=1#1 5P Decisions and Announcements]] thread." and second as a #-point at the bottom of the message, since it also has the fill-in form for videogames.

Er... lu, the update kinda went in wrong. The PM as a whole should read:

Hello, [[troper]], and welcome to the Special Efforts subforum!

Special Efforts is the place to organize and participate in large-scale efforts to improve the wiki, such as wick moving (after renames or namespace migrations), wick cleaning (removing misuse), and page cleaning (removing natter, correcting formatting, moving misplaced elements onto their proper subpages, etc.). Our goal is to keep the wiki looking nice and functioning smoothly.

Threads which deal with widespread issues and efforts (such as natter, the Playing With Wiki, and the namespace migration) are listed in the directory thread. If you have time to spare, take a look at these threads; there's always work to be done in them. If, in your wanderings across the wiki, you encounter a page which needs cleanup, but you don't have the time or knowledge to do it yourself, post a link and an explanation in the appropriate thread so that the problem can be fixed. The other threads deal with specific cleanup efforts.

If you haven't already, I would recommend reading Text Formatting Rules, Example Indentation, and How To Alphabetize Things, as they contain useful information for handling some of the more technical parts of improving the wiki. Welcome To TV Tropes also contains a lot of useful information, and has a lot of links to pages with more detailed information.

If, in the course of your cleanup, you come across a locked page which needs something fixed, add a post to this thread requesting the needed change. If a thread, a page, or a post needs some other sort of mod attention, use the yellow button (called the Holler button) which can be found at the top of each post.

This forum follows the general forum rules. If you want to rename a trope or think the description or definition needs sigificant revision, post in the Trope Repair Shop (TRS). If you are having problems with a specific troper, report the situation either by hitting the Holler button or by posting in Ask The Tropers. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me or any of the other staff.

Thank you for your help, and have a nice day!

That PM is probably long enough already, but in the Content Violations Welcome PM I'd note that a) the forum discusses creepy and controversial topics and you need to be ready for that and b) that the forum is not a soapbox for your opinions on the subject and these opinions are best left at the door.

In a Forum Game, use spoiler tags when having an on-topic conversation Forum Game within the thread to avoid unnecessary clutter within the thread.

This is in the forum games draft, but I don't quite get it. Can you clarify?

[up] I think something went wrong there. The "on-topic" should be put in parenthesis, as the way it's used doesn't apply most of the time. Also the "forum game within the thread" can be removed.

Basically, if you're having a discussion in a forum game thread that isn't part of the game, spoiler it to not break the reading/playing flow.
