We're going to appoint people in each of the subforums to welcome newbies in by an automated PM and show them how things work in the particular subforum.
The appointment thing is so that at least one person knows it is their job, and so the newbie doesn't get buried under a PM onslaught the first time they post.
We will give the appointee (now called Heralds) a spiffy icon badge so people will know they are on the job for everybody. There will also be access to a report that shows who is new in the subforum.
If you want to apply for the position, all you have to do is post a welcome draft here. That way, a moderator will consider you. If someone else has already applied for the position, don't worry! Multiple people can apply for one subforum.
This is a list
of the heralds that have already been appointed and the subforums that still need heralds. Positions that are labeled as being held by "TVTropes" are vacant along with positions that are blank.
Open sections with inactive heralds:
- Betsyandthe Five Avengers — World Building
- Ori Doodle — Old Folks Home
- JHM — Music

Hey there I want to apply for Herald for the Translation subforum. I wrote a letter in both spanish and english :).
English
This subforum is the place where we multilingual tropers aim to share the wonders of Tv Tropes with people that otherwise wouldn’t be able to enjoy all the brilliant and sometimes addictive articles, that are made each day by hard working tropers.
Due to the fact that the vast majority of the article’s on this site are made by our english speaking friends (with many new articles being created everyday), and taking into account that sometimes literal translations aren’t possible, our task is not an easy one.
Fortunately You Are Not Alone, in this noble goal. This is the perfect place for you to help and get help from fellow multilingual tropers in order to co-ordinate the various translation efforts.
You can either join an existing translation effort or create a new one. It’s not necessary to have a complete mastery of the language you want to help with, but if you aren’t sure about something, feel free to ask for help in the dedicated thread.
Just like every other sub-forum on this site the forum rules apply, please read them carefully before posting
. In addition here are some general guidelines that will make your stay more comfortable
- You are free to use the targeted language in the dedicated thread. For example if you are fluent in French you can speak that language in the specialized thread
- Only ON TOPIC talking is allowed. If you want to talk about topics not directly related to our translation efforts with other tropers, you are encouraged to use a more specialized subforum.
- Please don’t try to bypass the rules by using other languages. Remember that kindness and teamwork are universal.
- Some useful links: The Language index
and the International home page index
- If you want to request a particular translation, you can use the dedicated thread here
:
- Creativity is always welcome. Even if you are just translating an article, it doesn’t mean you can’t help by giving your language’s special touch.
Enjoy this amazing opportunity to share your knowledge and learn about other’s people culture.
Finally If you have any question feel free to contact me through a private message (I am a native Spanish speaker and fluent in english) or the forum moderators, please enjoy your stay.

Make your hearth shine through the darkest night; let it transform hate into kindness, evil into justice, and loneliness into love. You can still post a draft to be considered, dRoy; Zerogoki has
for Forum Games.

That was the amazing part. Things just keep going.Perhaps for the Translations forum, the PM could link to pages on the Wiki with translated versions of the message. The PM might say something like...
Those are all neat ideas, but I'm afraid I cannot give you the position, Fallen Legend. There is a suspension on your name, and um, I can't make you a herald because of it. Sorry.
Thanks for showing an interest, though. Perhaps you can try again after that suspension is lifted.
Still looking into your draft, Zerogoki.
"If you aren't him, then you apparently got your brain from the same discount retailer, so..." - FighteerHerald decisions are announced in public, I'm afraid. As I said, it's not permanent either.
"If you aren't him, then you apparently got your brain from the same discount retailer, so..." - FighteerIs there a way to get out of a suspension? I don't currently have one, but I'm just wondering. Time/effort, perhaps?
Also, still waiting. Take your time, though, no hurry.
Go play Kentucky Route Zero. Now.
The answer is yes, but that's off-topic.
Effort, yes. Suspensions are not permanent, unless you're a vandal/troll or completely unable to abide by wiki rules.
Also, what are you waiting on?

"If you aren't him, then you apparently got your brain from the same discount retailer, so..." - Fighteer...Huh.
I completely missed that! Stupid me. Sorry. >.<

"If you aren't him, then you apparently got your brain from the same discount retailer, so..." - FighteerYeah, I've been waiting on that for a pretty long time. I kind of figured that I had been turned down, but I guess not!
Go play Kentucky Route Zero. Now.Well, I just discovered (via Image Picking, which I went into recently after a loooooong absence) that the tool doesn't send out the message when you create a thread, only when you post in an existing one.
While we could argue over the point of creating a thread in a subforum you've never been in before, the tool might have to be tweaked to account for this.
(Also, how did it take one of us so long to notice this?)
It'd be nice if it sent the PM upon thread creation, because occassionally the OP doesn't reply to their thread so they never get it. This can be because the thread was in the wrong place and therefore locked before they can reply. Thread creation is also a way new accounts can get around the "no posting for 24 hours" thing.
Making a thread in a forum you've never posted in before isn't necessarily bad — I did it in TRS without realising (and didn't get the PM until I replied to my own thread), though the thread wasn't perhaps the best — since one may have lurked a long time and/or read the guidelines. However, this isn't always the case, as is signified by there being some Trope Talk threads that belong in Lost and Found.
Also, Lu, may I have a badge at some point?
I was always considering applying for FAQ, but it took some thinking to decide for appliance. Here is a draft:
As the name says, it's a place where the threads are where frequently asked questions are answered. Notice it's called Frequently Asked Questions; one-off questions should be taken to Ask The Tropers while more complex policy questions go to Wiki Talk
.
Since this is a forum mostly for reading, it usually doesn't get much activity. The rules
still apply here as well, of course.
A run-down of the more important threads here:
- Edit request for a locked page
, where you ask for edits to locked pages (preferably with your addition ready for copying in your post).
- Edit banned/suspended
, where - despite the name - all bans that aren't forum-wide are appealed.
- Forgot my password!
, where you ask for assistance if you can't access you account anymore.
- Renamed Tropes
, where tropes that were renamed are listed.
- How To Fix A Trope
and When To Rename A Trope
, where some Trope Repair Shop business is discussed and explained.
- THE FORUM RULES
, which of course apply here as well.
- GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS
, where important tech and policy changes are announced.
- Image Changin' Etiquette
, which discusses page image changing procedures (although the main thread is here
).
- What Goes Where On The Forums
, a directory for the forums (feedback and error alerts are always welcome).
- Finding Old Topics (Image Pickin'
and Trope Repair Shop
), something to do before opening a new thread in Trope Repair Shop and Image Pickin.
- Made Of Forum Win
, where people go to gush about awesome posts and moments in the forums.
- Crowners in need of more votes
, where your vote in crowners is asked for
and many more.
You've got questions? Feel free to PM me (except for bans, please don't ask me about them). Oh, and one more thing for people heading to the banned thread: Bans/Suspensions are routinely used as a warning/damage control measure and last until the staff is sure that the issue won't return again.
Have a nice day!

"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanThat's nice, Septimus, but can you consolidate the threads into bullet points? I think it will look neater and easier to read.
Jimmyman, I don't see anything wrong with your draft, but since you're so enthusiastic, is there some other media subforum you want to try for? I'm not sure Recommendations really needs a herald.
On another note, it might be a good idea if all the media heralds give a link to the recommendations subforum/thread in their message.
"If you aren't him, then you apparently got your brain from the same discount retailer, so..." - Fighteer

Re-posting some things to make them easier to findnote :
This
is the link to the list of which forums have and have not been assigned. It also has links to existing heralds' messages.
Here
is a link to the forum rules.
And this is a current, updating list of those drafts which have been proposed but not accepted or rejected. Stars indicate that the person has confirmed that they are still interested in and available for the position.
