We're going to appoint people in each of the subforums to welcome newbies in by an automated PM and show them how things work in the particular subforum.
The appointment thing is so that at least one person knows it is their job, and so the newbie doesn't get buried under a PM onslaught the first time they post.
We will give the appointee (now called Heralds) a spiffy icon badge so people will know they are on the job for everybody. There will also be access to a report that shows who is new in the subforum.
If you want to apply for the position, all you have to do is post a welcome draft here. That way, a moderator will consider you. If someone else has already applied for the position, don't worry! Multiple people can apply for one subforum.
This is a list
of the heralds that have already been appointed and the subforums that still need heralds. Positions that are labeled as being held by "TVTropes" are vacant along with positions that are blank.
Open sections with inactive heralds:
- Betsyandthe Five Avengers — World Building
- Ori Doodle — Old Folks Home
- JHM — Music

I did remake
mine as well.
I trimmed it down quite a bit. Did I overdo the trimming?
Specify the NSFW links are not allowed, and to say the least, you can warn them as well if they do do that.

Quest 64 threadNo one seems to have volunteered for the visual novels subforum, so I'd like to take that position. Here's my draft for the welcoming PM:
- Be sure to have read the forum rules here
. Since we're a small community, we don't usually attract much attention from the mods, but we'd also rather not start up any huge arguments here.
- We'd also like to draw attention to a particular rule on the list: explicitly NSFW images and links should not be posted, and repeatedly breaking this rule is grounds for banning. We'd like to keep things at PG-13.
- Related to the above, talk about pornographic material and fetishes found in a certain work should be taken to the Fetishes thread
in Yack Fest. If there's nothing to talk about a certain VN except for its pornographic aspects, then don't talk about it here.
- Another rule relevant to this subforum is this: No posting/linking of illegal material. Translation sites and freeware Visual Novels are okay, but linking to illegal copies of the original Japanese novels is a no-no.
- General talk (translation news, new releases, general thoughts that don't need a thread) on visual novels should go on the thread marked as such
. If we already have a thread on it, just necro the old thread, but be sure to have something to discuss about it.
- We also have general threads for certain visual novel companies (Type-Moon, Key, 07th_expansion). If you have thoughts regarding visual novels from them, then it's better to post them there instead of making another thread.
Finally, if you have any other questions that you'd like to be addressed, feel free to PM me or the mods. There's also a yellow holler button above each post if you feel that mod assistance is needed.
Now, with all that out of the way, have fun posting and welcome to our visual novels community!
Does that look any good?

MAL || vndb || Blog^ The guideline is "keep it sorta PG-13". It's my understanding that very mildly NSFW links (nothing pornographic/explicit) can be posted, but should be marked as such.

Welcome To TV Tropes | How To Write An Example | Text Formatting Rules | List Of Shows That Need Summary | TV Tropes Forum | Know The StaffI'll try my hand at writing one for Tech Wishlist.
Tech Wishlist is where users can chime in on issues affecting the core functionalities of the Wiki. If you have suggestions or problems with the features of TV Tropes, this is the place to put them.
Please keep in mind there are a few things you'll need to mention if you want to catch the attention of Fast Eddie, the head admin.
Before starting, make sure what you're posting belongs here. These problems are often tech issues and suggestions that can't be dealt with by either other users or the mods. This forum is for talking to Fast Eddie directly with problems that affect the wiki in its code. For everything else, take it to the other forums and Ask The Tropers.
First, name your topic well. We should be able to figure out what you're asking about just by reading the title.
Next, if you've got a suggestion, please describe what you'd like to see in more detail. Please be as specific as possible, since vague suggestions such as "improve X" don't really help much. Try "I think that X could be improved by..."
If you've got a problem, we still need to know what's wrong in detail. Try to attach a screenshot of the problem (Windows users, press Ctrl+Print Screen and paste the screenshot into an image editor such as Paint. Mac users, press Command+Shift+3. The screenshot will be saved to your desktop,) upload it somewhere, and then link to it from your post.
Please note that people will want to chime in on your idea/problem. They'll give their thoughts and suggestions to help improve on your thoughts and suggestions.
One last thing: Never, ever ask for a quote button on the forums.
Ever.
Have Fun!

Alright, here's my stab at a PM for IP; tear apart as needed.
The first thing you'll need to know is that we have some pretty definitive criteria for what constitutes a "good" image. How To Pick A Good Image, Image Pickin' thread criteria
, and Image Pickin' Etiquette
are where the guidelines are spelled out in detail, so make sure you check them out. Here are some quick starting points:
- Threads tend to come in three flavors: asking to remove a image (the most common), suggesting a replacement image, or suggesting an image for a page that doesn't have one.
- The most central guideline is that for an image to be used on a trope page, it must demonstrate the trope as clearly as possible; exceptions exist but are very rare. The vast majority of threads in IP deal with trope pages.
- Work pages generally use cover art, title screens, posters, and the like.
- The following are not allowed for use: NSFW pics, spoilers, watermarked pics, and almost all meme-based pics (demotivators, LOL Cats, etc.)
When you're looking through threads in IP, you'll see that we have a number of features which are also used in Trope Repair Shop but don't show up in other subforums, and set procedures for how we process threads. First, the features:
- Crowners - These are polls at the bottom of threads where suggested pics are voted on. They generally run for 3-7 days, and the winning image is used for the page. Threads marked with a medal icon in the thread list have a crowner attached, or "hooked".
- Clocks - A thread with a clock has a 3-day deadline to produce results of some sort or the thread will be locked. Clocked threads show up with a clock icon in the thread list.
- Final work - A thread with a big yellow asterisk in the list is in the final stages of its process and is needing some work performed before closing the thread.
The procedures:
- Once someone creates a thread, a motion to do something with the image currently on the page is made (usually to remove it; this list will assume that's the case). A simple majority of votes after 24 hours determines if the motion is performed or not.
- If/when the motion is done and the image is removed, images are suggested to replace it. If one suggestion is heavily favored, it can be put on the page without a crowner; otherwise a crowner is created and hooked to the thread.
- Once the crowner finishes and an image is selected, it's added to the page along with a caption (if one is suggested) and a hidden link to the IP thread, which is then closed. Many times other images suggested in the discussion are then placed on an Image Links page for the thread.
- Sometimes threads end up deciding to leave a page without a pic for whatever reason, or end up being locked due to sitting for too long without producing results.
- IP threads are not final, in the sense that if you find an image that works better than what the thread decides on, you're allowed to start a new thread for the page. However, "griefing" (arguing a thread's results just because you didn't like how it turned out) is not tolerated.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask; we're not shy and will be glad to help you out. Have fun!

Old Folk's Draft
In case you haven't read it yet, the following sums up The Old Folks.
You ever been to one of those big family reunions, where there's dozens of people of all ages? Noticed how the kids tend to find someplace where they can run around and play and be loud and sort of wild, and the older aunts and uncles tend to congregate somewhere away from the loud kids and talk? Sometimes the talk is serious, and sometimes it gets silly. If the kids want to come over and join the conversation, the adults don't chase them away, but they are expected to be calm and behave. That's what this forum is — the old farts sitting around on the porch talking while the kids played tag and chased the dog and had squirt gun fights over there in the yard.
That said, Hi there Troper!
Welcome to the Old Folk's Home. This is pretty much Yackfest for us older folk. We're a pretty laid-back group here, and we welcome people of all physical age—but there are a few important guidelines.
1. You should be willing to act like you are seventeen or even older. Leave the drama and the angst, but please bring your brain.
2. Speaking of leaving things, forum memes and image chains are not really appreciated in this sub-forum.
3. Thread derails, so long as the topic is interesting, are fine here. This is as much a chatterbox place as the other Just For Fun segments.
4. All other Forum rules apply. See The Rules for more information.

DoodlesWillbyr, you may want to make a note of simply suggesting a better image, suggesting an image for an empty page, or simply recommending a removal.
Fight smart, not fair.

Also, I volunteered for the Anime & Manga subforum, with my draft being here
.
If there are any problems I need to address with that, I'd be happy to make changes.
