Since we have a thread for improving the descriptions for tropes
, I thought I would make one for improving descriptions for works. This is also a good place for requesting creator page cleaning.
Here are some common problems with many work descriptions:
- Over-analytical Walls of Text: Many works that have a high Troper Critical Mass have egregiously long descriptions, and could use some trimming, possibly moving some of it to the Analysis page.
- Critical reception/audience reaction cruft: "Edit Tip #12: We are not interested in whether or not something is or was popular. Whether or not it was liked has nothing to do with tropes." In other words, work descriptions should not contain paragraphs nor any mention at all about how the work was received. Zap it.
- Editorialism: A similar issue to the above, some tropers have a tendency to try to sneak stealth reviews into works' descriptions. This is obvious deletion fodder - Kill It with Fire.
- Plagiarism: Copy-pasted text from another source, such as Wikipedia.
So just post any work or creator page descriptions that are in need of cleanup and we'll see what we can do.

This was just added to Dav Pilkey:
- My Nayme Is: His strange spelling of his first name originated from his teen years while working as a waiter at Pizza Hut where "e" in his name was accidentally omitted from his name tag. Thus, the oddly spelled nickname "Dav" stuck ever since.
Is this okay, or does it break the rule about troping real life?
This was added to the work page description for Birds of Prey (2020):
For a while this led to some (half-serious) joking that if the Academy Awards didn't update their rules due to the pandemic, that only films released in theaters are eligible, that meant Birds of Prey would be one of the few films from 2020 that could be put forward for Oscar nominations (though the Oscars ultimately did shift their rules due to the pandemic).

Cut that. That's just speculating about the 2020 Oscars. It's about as relevant as dedicating a paragraph to Sonic the Hedgehog (2020) being nominated for Best Picture.
Popee the Performer is basically a characters list. All corners of the work page need a good scrub, tbh, since they basically focus way too much on the What Do You Mean, It's for Kids? aspect.

Moriarty the Patriot is weird. The page is okay trope wise but the description is barebones. Like it doesn't say what the plot is.

I've just split off Film.The Devil Wears Prada from Literature.The Devil Wears Prada. I've moved over parts of the description that only apply to the movie, but the plot description is the same for both pages, and I'm not familiar enough with the works to try and change it.
Gonna axe those.
EDIT: Only the fifth paragraph requires cutting outright.

You can remove some of the folders (the Twitter account can go).
Maybe do like Franchise.Sonic The Hedgehog and have an index listing Expanded Universe material, which deserve their own pages.

Maybe we could make a Franchise/ page for Overwatch and move part of the description over there. There's Video Game/, obviously. I can make a page for The Hero of Numbani based on the Amazon preview, then there'll be Literature/. As for a third namespace, maybe the web animations and/or the comics can be split off? It would take some combing through the trope list, though.

Ni GHTS Into Dreams' description is a Wall of Text that goes way too in-depth.
Developed by Sonic Team for the Sega Saturn in 1996, NiGHTS into Dreams... is Sega's most iconic game that feature neither an anthropomorphic, blue hedgehog nor a Japanese mafioso with a dragon tattoo.
NiGHTS into Dreams... features a minimalist story revolving around two children, Claris and Elliot, both of whom have something troubling them. Claris is extremely nervous about her upcoming performance at a talent show, and Elliot had a nasty encounter with the local school bully. Uneasy, both children go to sleep that night and in their dreams they discover Nightopia, where they meet NiGHTS, a playful spirit that has been imprisoned by the God of Nightmares: Wizeman the Wicked.
The main objective of each level is to collect enough "Blue Chips" in order to recover objects known as "Ideya" from Wizeman's minions: the Nightmaren. The controls are separated into two distinct styles: the children and NiGHTS. Claris and Elliot can only walk on the ground and are constantly chased by an "Alarm Egg", which will wake them up and end the game if it catches up to them. NiGHTS is able to "dualize" with one of the children, doing so will allow NiGHTS to leave the prison temporarily. NiGHTS can fly, perform complex aerial acrobatics, and drill through the air very quickly. After all the Ideya in a level has been recovered, NiGHTS will be teleported to a boss fight.
The game also features a complex (for its time) Virtual Pet system known as "A-Life". Every stage is inhabited by child-like creatures called "Nightopians", which will react to your actions around them. Hatching their eggs and protecting them from hostile Nightmaren will please them and cause them to react positively when you approach. Harming or acting recklessly around them will scare them and cause them to run away from you.
NiGHTS into Dreams... was heavily inspired by the theories of Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung, and is well-known for its trippy (yet gorgeous) visuals, and soundtrack. NiGHTS has become a Cult Classic, and despite the low sales, is considered one of SEGA's most iconic franchises.
Christmas NiGHTS was released only a few months after the original game, during the Holiday season of 1996, also for the Sega Saturn. It features only a single level, which is just a Christmas-themed reskin of the Spring Valley level and Gillwing boss fight from the main game. Christmas NiGHTS features a plethora of bonus content, including an extensive Holiday Mode, which reacts not only to the date but also the time of day.
The original game was ported over to the Play Station 2 in 2008. It features a few technical enhancements, Christmas NiGHTS as a game mode, and some additional bonus content. This port was never officially released outside of Japan, however it eventually served as the foundation for an HD Remake in 2012, for Steam, Play Station 3 and Xbox 360.
A proper sequel was released in 2007 for the Wii. Unlike its predessecor, NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams features a more traditional narrative, with a larger cast of characters and greater emphasis on world-building and character development.
The NiGHTS and Sonic The Hedgehog series have always been closely intertwined with each other. Christmas NiGHTS features a tech demo that has the honor of being Sonic's first foray into 3D gameplay, predating Sonic Jam by about six months. Likewise, NiGHTS and other related characters have made numerous appearances in various Sonic games, including a few outright crossovers. In fact, it's not inaccurate to say that NiGHTS has made more appearances in Sonic's games than they have in their own.
A six-issue miniseries by Archie Comics was published in 1998. Unrelated to that, "The World of NiGHTS into Dreams..." made an appearance in the Worlds Unite crossover event, also by Archie.
NiGHTSintoDreams.com is a dedicated fansite that has been consistently updated with any relevant NiGHTS news since 1999. It features an extensive archive of just about everything NiGHTS-related that you can think of, including interviews with Yuji Naka and Takashi Iizuka.
In 2020, Yuji Naka and character designer Naoto Ohshima revealed that, as part of the new Square Enix subsidiary Balan Company, they were developing a Spiritual Successor to NiGHTS: Balan Wonderworld.

There are also video examples for both games mixed in one page, which is highly confusing since you can't tell which video is from which game.

I personally think the description would be shortened if we made pages for single games and the comic miniseries, as parts of it would likely be transferred.

The description of VideoGame.Castlevania Harmony Of Dissonance focuses too much on the game's reception and difficulty (or lack thereof).
