...I'm not any of them. I was made using parts of Mother. And now She's gone. So I guess I'm Mother now.

...

I don't know anymore. A long time. The files said four thousand years at least, and then a little before I came back here the Strangers had me, but I don't know for how long. Or maybe they were after. I don't know. Everything started to blur together after a while.

I'm guessing, then, that this Mother isn't your real parent, as the biological term goes.

In all that time, you never found a way back?

WonderSquid Since: May, 2012
#168203: May 6th 2015 at 11:41:11 PM

No. Mother is old.

Not really. Anyway, there's nothing left to come back to anymore, probably. Humans don't live that long.

Are you a human?

Don't be ridiculous, you don't have to apologise for asking a question.

There is such a thing as a stupid question, but that was not it.

WonderSquid Since: May, 2012
#168207: May 6th 2015 at 11:52:11 PM

It was a personal thing, though. Maybe you didn't want me to find out.

As a matter of fact you're right. It is a personal thing, and I don't feel I know any of you well enough to talk about it. But there was no harm alone in asking, especially after I had asked you several of the same sort of question.

Oh.

-Goes back to eating before he says something else offensive-

-Looks up after another moment-

-Something clicks-

The Lifestream. That's what you sounded like. Old and always there, and a little bit angry. I got to hear it once.

Is that so?

-For the briefest of seconds a wry smile plays around her lips-

I suppose that makes some level of sense.

-Nods-

...But you said you weren't from the Planet. -His face falls a little-

That is true. I'm not from your Planet. But I find that there tend to be similarities between very different places when you get down to it. Perhaps that is why my Voice sounded like your Lifestream.

WonderSquid Since: May, 2012
#168213: May 7th 2015 at 12:19:11 AM

...The Lifestream is part of everything living. It's what souls are made of, and things like life and magic and memories and emotions, and what makes it possible for Planets to be Planets and stars to be stars. It's a part of us, and we're part of it. It's... it's in the core of the Planet, but it's also a place that isn't a place. Like another world, but not, and the Lifestream is just what brings you there. -Scratches his neck-

...When someone is born, a part of the Lifestream is given to them. It's what keeps them alive, and it's what becomes their soul. When they die, it returns to the Planet. The memories and emotions are lost, but the Lifestream is always there, and it flows through the Lifestream and becomes a part of something or someone else. And one day that returns to the Planet too, to begin the whole thing over again.

...

Maybe I'm not part of it anymore. Maybe that's why I can't go back.

-Listens to the explanation without making a sound-

Going by your description, that hardly seems possible. I am no biologist, but you seem alive, especially if planets and stars are part of this "life" as well. Perhaps the lifestream doesn't exist here. Perhaps here, it is different.

WonderSquid Since: May, 2012

...I don't know if I am anymore. I'm different. Like Mother. Mother wasn't... Mother technically wasn't alive. She was different.

-Susan seems to Look at Cloud. Or through him-

You are alive. To me, at least.

But I suppose it's the Lifestream's definition that matters in this case, isn't it? Perhaps I would have seen your mother as living as well.

Maybe.

-Makes sure Jack or anyone else he wants to like him is listening-

-Lowers his voice-

...Mother was a virus. Viruses aren't really alive, are they?

-Seems to think about this-

Well. Scientifically, I don't suppose that they are. But neither is a story, or a song, or a god, and I know that they can all die.

All humans are, really, is a bunch of chemicals and self-replicating proteins. What makes that "alive"?

Your mother may have been a virus, but if you are the same, she was a virus that could think. Act. Ultimately, what is the difference between one set of self-replicating proteins and another?

...I guess you're right.

...-Goes back to eating, having cheered up slightly-

...There are lots of things I think I could find out, but it's... it's buried, I think. It's there. They woke it up. But there are so many things over it it gets hard to remember that.

The organic mind does find having many memories difficult to process. It's only designed to hold so much.

I think they were trying to wake me up, though.

It's loud, and messy and full of people. Quite a lot of them idiots, but that seems to be a universal constant.

"People" includes quite a few races. From the ghouls to vampires, to golems, to humans, to dwarves... really, it's a wonder that it survives as it does.

And then there are the other entities. The gods, big and small. Plenty of them stupid too. There are the ideas that make sure that the sun rises instead of a flaming ball of gas. And other things.

-By the way how loud was the "bam" Norm?-

-Trying to work a way to bring Jack in if you like-

-If not never mind-

Of course, it is not always a nice place. But I think that if you try to hide reality from children, all you get are adults who have been taught to lie to themselves about reality. Not the good lies, either.

So I teach.
