There was a plague. Or a war, or something. Or perhaps we were just dying with the world. Nobody knows. But no new children were born for a long time, so... one Queen, the Queen above, found Tam Lin, a human, and took him as her mate. Many of the best, strongest, healthiest, fairest humans were brought here, and many children were born just as strong and fair and healthy.
...Tam Lin was the first, though, and he had a human mate already. She came and won him back, and that angered the Queen.
Some children were also not satisfactory.

Many were born strong. Others showed human weaknesses, and were shunned. Their children, too, were sickly, or short-lived, or imperfect, or hadn't the eyes or the hands for any of our arts.
The Queen cut ties that we had had with the humans in their worlds. There was much bitterness still in her heart.
The half-breeds too were shunned, too, and resentment grew against them as it did from the queen. And as the human blood in the strongest children was gradually diluted, the human blood in the weaker ones intermingled and created more weakness.
Some brownies were not born human. Some humans were not born brownies, either. In the end, it matters little.
