...Yeah, of course it works that way. A set amount of power is generated by the engine, and the power is routed to the various subsystems on the ship, like shields, weapons, oxygen, thrusters, and so on. You can run a subsystem with less than the maximum power, it'll just be slower or less powerful. So, we just remove some of the power from the thrusters and transfer it to the shields, so it's at maximum. It's elementary stuff. I bet there's even a specific command for it on the piloting console.

We're not moving, and if we get ambushed here, the shields will buy us some time to reroute full power to the engines, disable the speed cap, get the fuck out of there, and turn the cap back on once we're out of danger.
