KN: Dude, Sugarhill Gang came before Run-DMC AND the Beasties. Though you can make the argument that they were Disco Rap and not true hip-hop (and some have), I still think they merit a mention.

What about Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five?

I see. As I'm sure I've mentioned, I'm no authority on the development of hip-hop.

Yeah, Sugarhill and the Furious Five are both (if I'm keeping my timeline straight) pre-Bridge Wars groups, while Run-DMC and the Beasties are post-Bridge Wars.

In America, I'd say ska didn't really come into the mainstream until the 3rd wave in the 90s. So, either The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Reel Big Fish, or No Doubt.

Swing fusion music would probably be Brian Setzer.

@Blixty I consider Run DMC and the Beastie Boys the once that bought there genre's into the mainstream because they were the ones who proved Hip-Hop wasn't a fad and because the Beastie Boys had the first rap album to reach number one on the Billboard charts.

The smartest idiot you will ever meet.

Ah. That makes some sense, then.

I'd still give credit to The Furious Five and Sugarhill then, just not in the same way.

I just realized, a fairly obvious one that's been neglected a mention: Self-contained bands who write their own music. Started with Buddy Holly and the Crickets, but popularized by The Beatles.
