"I like girls, but now, it's about justice."Well, it doesn't.
40k puts the derp in grimderp. It's dark to the point where it feels like it's trying too hard to shock, and you don't really give a shit about what happens and the stuff it tries to throw at you. It doesn't feel scary or interesting, and I can't sympathsie with what's going on.
MY SOUL IS DARK BUT MY HAIR IS COLORFUL — Brahian Pokémon AlchemistI don't give a shit about shocking any of you, as far as Cloud goes. I'd honestly rather I didn't, because that leads to bitching. Regardless of the jokes I have made in the past, everything I do, I do for a damn good reason. I also recognise that you have to have good moments to balance out the bad ones, so it feels that much sadder when something goes wrong, and that much better when things finally go right. This is something I feel like 40k hasn't quite grasped. No matter how human they are, if they're all guaranteed to be dead or worse by the end of things then I really couldn't care less.
It used to be, in the beginning. Then I think it started taking itself a little too seriously.

MY SOUL IS DARK BUT MY HAIR IS COLORFUL — Brahian Pokémon AlchemistI really wouldn't say it's that dark, yet.
Honestly, the biggest problem is that the universe is at a stalemate at the moment and the storyline isn't moving at all.
As a setting for a wargame based around armies fighting on table-top- that's an ideal scenario.
One that anyone can feasibly "win" or survive.
Yes- it really does look shitty for anybody who can be seen as the "good guys", despite the fact that the game gives everyone faults so that it entices customers to give the other armies a try- And then there are others that are specifically set for the people who like playing villains.
It's all up to interpretation whether the Imperium of Man is just doing things out of necessity, or whether things really need to change.
But I wouldn't say it's that grimderp. It can be ridiculous- and I honestly hate the Space Marines a little bit.
The game's material also focuses on the bad areas of the galaxy- because that's where most of the action and war is going to be. That's where most of the "interesting" stuff would be.
The whole of the 40k Universe isn't being fucked over constantly, there are a few worlds where people get by, sometimes in dystopias and worlds where surviving is an achievement, sometimes on quiet agricultural worlds where they may never in their lifetimes see any of the dangers out in the galaxy.
