In other news- I managed to win a game of chess.

Legitimately.

I put someone in check-mate.

I don't even remember my strategy, but it was all about sacrificing things for the greater good.

in fact

let me copypaste a ingame book here

Basics of Illusion By Katsu Aoi

So you've searched whatever library this book has come to rest in, stumbled upon it by chance, and hope to uncover the secrets of the unknown. Behind these pages, you will find just that—Pages that pry into the minds eye, feeding it the sensory input it craves, because at the most primal level the mind longs to understand. If you choose to continue reading, more power to you, but be warned. This book will change you. Shape you. Coming to an understanding with my strange, mysterious magics comes at a cost. To receive the unknown, the mind itself must become the unknown.

I am Katsu Aoi. I am the unknown.

Chapter 1 - What are Illusions? Illusions. The very word sends those aware of my powers into a state of alarm and disturbance. Why? It is the power to deceive. The logical mind would ask next—What does it deceive? In my past, I've run into others who try to understand this. They make theories, wild speculation, or even opinion based on incomplete facts. A pathetic attempt to understand my magic.

Most of those intolerant fools believe it controls the mind itself. You would think with the power to control the mind; Kraus given free-will itself, one wouldn't even have the option of suspecting such madness, before they forget that train of thought ever existed at the hand of my power. I assure you, Illusion spells have no way of changing the way others think, their will, or their beliefs. If that's the reason you've read thus far, sorry to disappoint you, no such magic exists.

Illusion tricks the senses. Sight, Touch, Hearing, Taste, and Smell.

Chapter 2 - Using Illusions

Most common magics are based on using mana to bend a medium to your will. Be it water, the earth, fire, or the forces of wind, sound, or lightning. They are all based on physical aspects. Illusion is no different. Now, you ask me, what physical embodiment does illusion control? Perception.

Perception is your senses way of intaking information about what happens around you. You see an apple on the table. You are able to distinguish it's speckled red color. To feel it's light weight in your hand, before taking a bite, tasting its sweet smooth textured flesh, smelling its fermented scent, feeling the chopped bits slide down your throat. Sensing, is to understand what's outside of your body.

Illusion warps that. That apple you just took a bite of. Look again. In you hands, you no longer feel the smooth globe of nurturing fruit. Instead, you see a purple mushroom with a bite mark in its side. That piece of savory goodness lodged in your throat has become, or rather reverted to, a cur to gag on. In your last moments, you see the bestower of your would be apple, an assassin posing as your ally.

Who's to say what's real? Who's to say what's not? That hypothetical situation is only an example of the way illusion works. I believe it justifies the fear others have for it's power. Disguising Nightshade as Apples are only the beginning...

Chapter 3 - Mana, Illusions, and You

Mana. It is the catalyst in this equation of mystery. The compound that makes all this possible. How is it to be used, you ask? A many different ways. It's where Illusion differs the most from other forms of magic. Assuming you are already well versed in the manipulation of mana, I will now explain the two methods of applying illusionary spells.

Tactile Illusions — Tactile, as in touch, is what I call the method of singling out a person and pumping your mana directly into their bodies to produce a desired effect. This is the most potent use. Once your mana is inside them, you can change what they see, hear, etcetera, at a moments notice. An advanced illusionist is capable enough to use this without the need of literal contact touching. Directing your mana over a range to hijack another's senses will do. With this, dulling other's senses become possible, such as temporary blindness, etcetera.

External Illusions — External, as in outside the body, is what I call the method of coating something in your mana, be it an object, or yourself, to make it appear to be something its not. Very effective for things such as camouflage, changing the appearance of things (like the apple example), or if you have the concentration for it, changing the way a scenery appears by layering your mana over a small area for anyone to see or hear. It can take forms, such as clones, or other outside forces, that have potential to inflict phantom pain, a great assist in close combat.

Illusions are more than just sight based. They change touch, smell, hearing, and even taste if necessary. Detail is key.

Chapter 4 - Illusions and Emotions

If you've read 'The Fundamentals of Magical Power', you would know how heavily dependent magical forces are on emotional output. A vital part of the mix in channeling mana. In my years of using Illusionary magic, the most prominent emotion I feel is joy, since I adore letting out my creative side. Making people see what I want, to fool them while they're caught in my web of falsification is my own gratification. It's like being a god of a small world of your own creation. As a child, I loved stories, I loved being read to by my parents. It's how I came up with the idea of illusion, although I am not the first to ever come up with it, according to history.

Joy is just one of many emotions I feel. I mentioned joy specifically because it would appeal to the... lighter side of knowledge seekers. Find what best suits you.

Chapter 5 - Fear, the Unknown, and You

Fear. One of the most primal expressions we humans share. Anyone can relate to that time your flesh crawled, your voice goes shrill, you try to hold back a scream, or a cry, while you fight at the sudden urge to flee. A hand slapping on your shoulders from behind is all it takes to make you jump out your boots. It's the unknown that scares us most, as humans. It puts us in our most vulnerable state.

As an experienced illusionist, I have used fear countless times in the past as my weapon, to send others into a psychological state of temporary shock. In order to use fear, you must become fear, embrace fear. Learn it. Live it. Master it. Take note of every small detail you experience when you feel fear, and induce them upon someone with your illusions, and the body will naturally respond to those sensations. They will create the physical embodiments of fear's expression. Your mana will magnify that, and then you will let the person's mind do the rest. Forcing them to see their own deepest fears, without the need to know what to show them yourself.

Other emotions are less as effective. Love, for example. You can make someone feel as though their heart skips a beat all you want, it cannot make what fear can. Unlike the other emotions, fear is based on the unknown, while most other emotions are based on what is understood. You see someone get hurt, you feel sympathy. You do something wrong, you feel shame. You do something wrong, you feel guilt. The key here, is that other emotions are a response to what's really there. Fear is a response to what could be there. Hence its capability to be induced.

Chapter 6 - Training your Mind

Mental fortitude is a must to perform illusions. You must exercise your mind daily, whether it be through meditations, or exploring new experiences. You must always have an adaptable mind. An imagination that can adjust to any situation, less you get caught up in your illusions and loose control. An eye for detail comes from the ability to notice it, but also to envision it, and look beyond what's really there. You must believe something yourself before you can make others believe.

Chapter 7 - Miscellaneous Techniques

A compilation of some miscellaneous techniques I've pioneered.

Illusion Sonopathy/Telepathy — By hijacking another's sense of hearing, you could make them hear things, like your voice. Therefor, you can tell someone something in secret, as if you're speaking with your mind, and no one could be the wiser.

Illusion Warmth — By taking the reins of your own sense of touch, you can shrug off cold by fooling your senses into thinking its warm. This prevents symptoms, such as shivering, and other psychological effects of cold. A nice tool to stay focused while fighting in unsatisfactory climates. However, even though you ignore the cold, it is still physically there. So using this will -not- prevent things like hypothermia. Remember, they're just illusions.

Closing Statement

I would like to give thanks to Suzume Yuuka. The woman who took me in as a child that gave me the idea to pursue illusion magic. I would also like to thank my real parents, where ever they are right now, for raising me to love tales so much.
