Okay, currently, I working on his personality (or lack thereof).
What I want to do is drop my botched attempt at a "lovable asshole" since there's really nothing lovable about a person like that.
Instead, I wanted to go for this " kinda absentminded guy who knows more than he lets on." By "knows more than he lets on", I kinda want to say he's Obfuscating Stupidity. He's smarter than he acts but not on the levels of "super genius".
I'm looking for ways to reinforce this instead of just saying, "yeah, that's how he is."
I'm considering writing him as, as Mobile put it when I asked her, "..bit socially-awkward, but good natured".

I live in a constant state of fear and misery. What's funny is that I don't think I handle criticism too well, in some way.
It's not like I say to them 'OH YOU BUTTFACE I TOTALLY DO WAY BETTER THAN YOU' sort of thing.
But their words are lodged into my brain for a few hours and I feel slightly bothered.
I still take their advice though, just to be on the safe side.
Is that bad?
Ooooh, do go on...

GO AHEAD .... MR. JOEHSTUR .......I say go with what you think is best.
It doesn't really matter what a character is, it's just how that is is portrayed.
Right now I'm basically playing a guy who's humanity minus the conscience.
Basically a selfish brute that will punch someone if he feels like it.
1.5 imperial gallons of tea were consumed during the writing of this postYou could have him be absent minded most of the time, and on occasion hint at the fact that he knows a lot more and/or does possess some form of wisdom.
Like a few Dumbass Has a Point moments.
"Shake the dust." - Anis MojganiI think Obfuscating Stupidity might of been wrong.
What I want to go with is that he's not hiding it on purpose, it's more of a Hidden Depths thing.
"He's just awkward enough that he can't really showcase his intelligence".
@Badge, I'm liking that.

I live in a constant state of fear and misery.@Chris:Bascially what you want to do is make him kinda socially awkward but not to the poing of being mentally handicapped. Every now and then have him say ssomething smart that seems like he just accidentally stumbled on the answer. Make him Genre Savvy but not to the point of being meta. So basically you need a right mix of things to pull this off.

It's all well and good that you've planned this out, but it won't do a bit of good if you don't express this in your writing. Show us he's all of these things. Don't just tell us. That's all I can say for now.
