oh hey badger

the house ain't all that bad, is the house 2 supposed to be a thrill ride or somefin?

[up]I learned a few things about Holly from trying to figure out how the fuck you draw somebody lying down.

One: Holly's fucking cool, dude. Two: Artemis Fowl sounds very interesting and I should pick it up sometime. And three: ...her boots seem to be connected to her suit or something? Minor nitpick there.

Did not realize that. Will keep it in mind. Also, yes, Artemis Fowl is great. Just ignore books 6-8.

Artemis Fowl is awesome.

Has anyone here ever read the CHERUB series, or is that not big in the US?

6: Time travel and forced romance subplot.

7: Bizarre choices, annoying characterization for Artemis, nonsense plot.

8: What.

On a phone outside, so I can't click that link. Then again, I probably wouldn't click on that link anyway.

Again, I'm a giant fucking pussy.

Have I told you guys about the time my friend showed The House 2 to another friend?

I can dig time travel, tho, and I can tolerate romance subplots.

Do I assume the time travel was handled badly?

What Random said. It's a damn shame. The first five books are great.

It was meh. The romance, though, I'm ambivalent over.

It's like Young James Bond except the author took pains to make the idea of young spies a serious one.

Basically, the kids are orphans who are pretty much unpersoned by a secret branch of the government who takes them to a special school out in the middle of nowhere where they're trained to be agents.

The reasoning is, a criminal would be suspicious if an adult agent came to their house and asked questions. But if their kids brought home friends who ran around (and planted bugs and stole data from hard-drives when nobody was looking) they wouldn't bat an eye.

They go after drug lords, domestic terrorists, bike gangs other frighteningly realistic baddies. No volcano lairs.

And unlike Alex Rider and all that super spy stuff, they're never given a job that is beyond a kid's ability - most of their work is done in tandem with actual adult agents.

No fancy gadgets, either. Just lock-guns and other actual spy gear. It's a deconstruction of the idea of kid spies.

I want to read it as well now too.

Shit, I may as well pick up the Dresden Files too the next time I actually go to a bookstore.

And I still hate them.

Again, I'm a giant fucking pussy.

So, my friend, we'll call him G, shows another friend of ours, who we'll call S, The House 2 on G's laptop in class. So they play it for a while, and G is just yelping at every scare. Then we get to the bedroom with the loading screen scare. G literally screams like a little girl, while S is just laughing her ass off.

And unlike Alex Rider, the kids are actually treated with respect, can choose whether or not to enter or even whether or not to remain.

Once they're an adult, they leave, with a shitload of credentials.

Why isn't this in the US? It's rad as hell.

But yeah, the Dresden Files is a kickass series. It really starts to pick up steam around book 3.

Yep, pretty much.

The stories get pretty damn dark, which is startling when the protagonists are between 11-17.
