Commas can be used to
- Separate complete thoughts within a sentence. Complete thoughts are anything that can stand on its own as a sentence and has a subject, and object, and a verb. (I couldn't find a sock to gag by budgies with, so [transitional phrase, try taking this out to check if you have two separate sentences] I just roasted and ate them.)
- Separate objecs in a list. (We need to buy vinegar, tomatoes, onions, olives, and chick peas.) Note how each item gets a comma, including the second to last one, before "and".
- Help clear away ambiguity by defining clear thoughts and ideas, as seen above and in this sentence. Note how those examples did not contain independent sentences, but nevertheless would read as confusing run-ons had I not put them in. By inserting the comma, I make a distinction between ideas. This can be a little harder to distinguish, but a good way to check if you need a comma is to say the sentence in your head and check where you'd pause to breathe. Chances are, you would put a comma there.
- Before too at the end of the sentence. (I want to be in the movie, too.) This isn't strictly necessary from what I've seen, but it does make the sentence look nicer and gives it a bit better flow.

so what have you beautiful people been up to
Also, theeeere's something I want to disagree about with that "comma before too at the end of the sentence" thing.
"I want to be in this movie, too." vs "I want to be in this movie too."
It doesn't really give it a nicer flow in my opinion. It sounds more like you're stopping up at the end there. "I want to be in this movie. Too." is how I'm sounding it out. Dunno, just wanted to interject there.

I had proper sentence structure and grammar indoctrinated into me since I could form words. I am forever bound to the comma.
What if there’s no better word than just not saying anything?
