But its not a reference at all.
Kylo Ren is already in the underdog roll
...To the protagonist.
The next movie is most likely going to Focus on Rey's formal training.
But. Rey is already awesome enough to apparently beat a skilled Sith.
So we don't care if she gets trained, she's just gonna be more awesome.
But when Ren gets trained and comes back to beat Rey, that is what people will care about.
Kylo Ren is the protagonist.

The big problem with that is that, by definition, the story revolves around the protagonist.
And that's just not a thing for him.
Like, at all.
He doesn't get that kind of screentime.
Finn, Poe, and Rey get that kind of attention, but he just doesn't. He's not the focus of the story.
The thing about Rey's growing potential is that the Force isn't something that training really affects. Forget the prequels and such, in the original trilogy Luke received very little actual training, and indeed Yoda told him his true test was facing down Vader. Trial by fire. And indeed, even before that the Force interceded and guided Luke to take the shot to blow up the Death Star. I don't understand why people chuck such bitchfits over Rey being able to defeat a wounded Kylo with that same power behind her. Focus, patience, faith and discipline were all Yoda wanted Luke to take to heart - he never needed real training to use the powers themselves, just refinement. Rey is unrefined, just as he was. It's just that her needs were much more pressing and thus the Force called upon her while she had much less to go off.
What if there’s no better word than just not saying anything? Also, another reason why Rey was able to call upon the Force to a greater extent than Luke could have at the same age - she's patient. She's methodical. She's perceptive. She's reflective. She never had big dreams or ambitions like Luke. The Force comes to those with true confidence, patience and disipline - something that comes easier to Rey than to Luke.
What if there’s no better word than just not saying anything?@Ram:Yes.
@Norm:So forget the force mumbo jumbo for a sec, because honestly the Force is just applied phelobtinum. Its just a thing we accept as being there, like magic or energon. What I'm trying to say is for the sake of drama, the story, thematics, Kylo Ren is not a threat to Rey. And now must go off and train in order to reach that level, when he should have been there from the start.

Imma dump some Star Wars on you folks.
Kylo Ren is a complete loser with delusions of grandeur.
He receives some training from an old wise Force user.
He has a confrontation with his father.
And he gets mindfucked, and subsequently beaten to shit by a superior Force user.
And now he's going off to complete his training with an older Force user so that he can beat the person that beat him.
