Okay.
I'mma do a proper Episode II rant now that I have a compooper.
Brace yourselves.
What if there’s no better word than just not saying anything?Obi Wan should have arrested Jango Fett on sight, but doesn't.
Not only is Jango's armour in plain sight, but the dart used was confirmed to be from Kamino. Jango is also being uber evasive, avoiding the topic of whether he's been to Coruscant recently, as if it's perfectly normal to forget whether or not you've been to the galactic capital. His story is also dodgy as all heck, as he claims not to know who Master Sifo Dyas is. Sifo Dyas, the guy who is ostensibly footing the bill for the entire army Jango is making.
The expanded universe makes it clear that though Sifo Dyas foresaw the coming war and commissioned Kamino for an army in secret, he didn't choose Jango Fett as the template, as by that point Dooku had killed him and assumed his identity, selecting Jango as the template under the guise of his Sith name, Tyrannus.
Still, you'd think Sifo Dyas would have come up in conversation in the 10+ years, so Jango definitely knows who the guy is, but is choosing to lie. Why? Why pretend not to know? Why implicate Tyrannus, your co-conspiritor?
So, Jango's story is full of holes. At this stage, Obi Wan is well within his bounds as a Jedi investigator to implicate the Mandalorian as the bounty hunter he's looking for. Taun We might protest, but Kamino doesn't want their first official interaction with the Republic in god-knows to be harbouring a murderous fugitive. It'll ruffle some feathers with the planet's Prime Minister, but ultimately they don't want to piss off their Jedi benefactors. They're the ones that will foot the bill for the shiny new army, by the way.
Jango at this stage is unarmoured and probably unarmed. He'd definitely try something the first chance he got, but not in the tight confines of the Kaminoan building. Kenobi is never going to get a better chance to wring some answers out of him, perhaps even placing him under house arrest if he doesn't want to cause a stir while in the process of questioning the bounty hunter.
Instead, Obi Wan leaves Jango in peace, goes to the Jedi to report on his theories, and then goes to do exactly what they say, which is "um, he's right there isn't he? Arrest him and bring him to us". This gives Jango time to pack his shit, get his son on the ship, armour up and be ready for battle as he flees the planet. Why'd Obi Wan insist on sending micro-reports to the Council before learning anything? He was fifteen-twenty minutes away from learning the secret of the Sith, did he have to stop for a breather or something?
Anyway, that's just me. I've been sitting on this rant for a while, but I saw How It Should Have Ended and they made the same argument, so I'm fired up again.
What if there’s no better word than just not saying anything? Is anyone there? Please, somebody validate my angry Star Wars nerd stuff.
