@Mobile: oh my goodness one of you has actually read it
I knooooow
like seriously everything from the writing to the characterisation to the fight scenes are so much better
@Box: basically
I am very much of the opinion that much of the flaws of the prequels could have been amended if someone was willing to just say to George " okay no" as they did with the OT
he needs other people to point out his flaws
but no-one did and the rest is history
@Riv: I am sorry you are experiencing it in a limited way
but yeah yoda is great

well I mean
again the idea behind jar jar is fine
comic relief character for the kiddies
that's fine
it's just that the execution was...
well
and therein lies the problem
@Mobile: personally I was always impressed by the fact that he actually made younglings sound natural
seriously I still get chills reading that opening

well
I am talking about the very very basics of the idea here
from that point onwards his existence was a mistake yes
but yeah one of the weirdest things about the phantom menace was the sheer number of racial stereotype aliens
you have watto, the trade federation, apparently jar jar
it's just on a sheer pr level it feels like someone would have said something
Jar Jar kind of ties into a major problem with the prequels in general - they tried to make it more kid friendly in really obtuse ways.
George Lucas didn't think a movie about people who swing around laser swords in outer space was something kids could get into, so he added racial stereotypes and a romance arc.
How do you goof that badly.
