@fox in a bok: yes
@squid: also yes
@hil: well yeah I guess
everything is to do with how well you handle it
I've never seen that line handled well though
except for once in the lord of the rings and that's because it wasn't that line and was a characterising extended discussion between Sam and Frodo
i mean its a very bad line if its used to try to make someone sound badass, which is pretty much the only time it is used. i was sort of inventing a scenario where it might sound less stupid
also what if someone watches a movie and thinks its a comic book because they don't understand how the world works?
yet another situation where "this is not a comic book" would be appropriate
@fox: that is acceptable to me because it was used to explain the gravity of the situation to kids
it bothers me more when its, say, in a comic where every other superhero wears a costume but one dude is like "bitch please, im not going to do this dumb thing that comics do because this isn't a comic and also im really cool"

to be fair
i think that is a perfectly valid response if one character is talking to another character who talks in tropes too much
but then again you are doing something wrong if you have a character like that for them to respond to in your story the first place
so i don't know what the point of this post was
just stop reading it
