Actually, the "Cosmic Retcon" was just shorthanding and the real way it works is pretty much what I guess you want.
What it does it teleport the user to where he would be in the alternate scenario and occlude memories of people with not enough mental resistances, providing them with a believable tale of events. Actual physical changes (such as the broken door, or anything that happened to people moved too) do stay the same.
