I was gonna sing Pokemon Ash Gray's praises, because not only was it faithful to the anime and the spirit it was in but with enough freedom to where you didn't feel constantly railroaded or forced into choices for the sake of the plot (you're allowed to win certain battles Ash lost or use different Pokemon than he did), but it was also relatively bug free. Unfortunately, as it tends to go with most romhacks, it shat itself near the end as far as event triggers are concerned. Retracing ground in areas you've already been to causes the game to lock you out of certain areas and re-activate old events, forcing you to use a walk through walls cheat to make any sort of progress because some NPC is not saying the part of the script he's supposed to be. And god forbid you ever stop and take a break in the middle of anything, because the next time you load your save file several events will have reset, forcing you to corrupt your own save just so it loads a previous one.

All the problems sort of happened at once with this one. I'm about to face several high-level NPCs (difficulty curve is another thing it started having issues with at the home stretch), but because the game is so bugged out I can't just leave, train for it, and come back, because that will cause the guard to think that the Pokemon League isn't happening until you get your eight badge and will lock you out permanently (again, save for using cheat codes to walk around him).

So now I'm forced to use even more cheat codes just so the game won't be rendered unwinnable.

Fucking event flags, man.

I... don't really think it's fair to take that and somehow turn it into "man fuck Australia".

Of course we have issues, and chief amongst those in my eyes is our criminal treatment of refugees (as in "actually illegal if anyone actually could enforce that")

but there is a very large leap from "both our major political parties treat refugees terribly, stop the boats, yadda yadda and this gives us credit with some European right wing (even neonazi) groups who also want to 'stop the boats' due to the context" to "Australia in general is a shitty racist country"

I reserve the right to be dissatisfied by my country for poorly defined and dubiously researched reasons - I'm a uni student.

yeah

i mean keep in mind the article is technically about neo-nazis in Germany, europe is clearly not the bastion of liberal enlightenment some people (read: young American college students) believe it is

Australia might not be racist, but it's certainly popular with racists.

oh no I completely understand that

I too, as a uni student know that it is my sovereign duty to hate the government

Seriously though I don't want my last post to come across as "you're not allowed to be dissatisfied with the country", just that I... found the soundbite an oversimplification? I guess

I'm just pissed with the self-perpetuating cycle of the government being convinced by popular opinion to treat refugees like shit while also encouraging popular opinion to believe that that refugees should be treated like shit which makes them convince the government to treat refugees like shit.

Hyperbole is how I get angry in a medium where I can't shout.

Tony Abbott invented boats and stop signs, true facts, I read it up in this lefty rag here. I like to read it because its headline says "Prime Minister, or Prime SINISTER: 44 Mindblowing Ways Australia's Prime Minister Is Keeping Detention Centre Whistleblowers Silent: Doctors Hate Him (Because He Keeps Them From Reporting Refugees Being Raped)"

Pokemon Ash Gray is now unwinnable due to a glitch that I can't Gameshark my way out of this time. I think I'm gonna call this one and switch games.

One hell of a glitch, though. The irony is not lost on me.

That is not what that is.

Signal keeps dying.

How does that glitch make it unwinable?

Basically, Ash Gray is a (until today anyway) well-programmed hack that follows the plot of the anime. I'm at the episode where Ash is supposed to enter a raffle and win the grand prize and go on a free blimp ride because he's the protagonist and that's how the plot advances since, to be clear, Pokemon wasn't exactly a good show.

First time through, I win the grand prize immediately like I'm supposed to and proceed to talk to the guy who is to give me a blimp ride. He asks me if I've enjoyed my blimp ride instead, meaning somehow the entire event got flagged as "over" as soon as I won the ticket in the first place. I am unable to buy any more raffle tickets.

So I reset the game and try again. Except now I'm completely unable to win the raffle, period. Two things happen when I try:

  • I win a shitty healing item that nobody uses past the second gym. (Ice Heal, Burn Heal, Antidote, et cetera.)
  • More often: I do not win anything. The game forces me into dialogue as soon as I end the first interaction, makes me buy another raffle ticket, where I continue to not win anything, so the game forces me to buy another raffle ticket, I don't win anything, the game forces me to buy another raffle ticket...

I say "forces" because all you can really do is mash A or B. You can't leave the conversation or exit the store. There's a "yes/no" box asking if you want to buy a raffle ticket. Saying yes continues the above loop. Saying no gets you "okay, maybe next time"... and then gives you a Master Ball out of nowhere because the game doesn't know how to resolve a situation where you don't receive an item at the end of that script, and first available item ID after "no item/ 0x00" (0x01) happens to be the Master Ball, so it defaults to that. And then forces you to buy another raffle ticket. And you say no. And you get another Master Ball. And then you have to buy another raffle ticket, but you say no, and you get another Master Ball. And a Master Ball isn't a grand prize, so you have to buy a raffle ticket. And you get another Master Ball.

I have received nothing but Master Balls for the last ten minutes and I am stuck forever, completely unable to advance the plot ever.
