If either first base is unoccupied or there are two outs, and the catcher does not cleanly catch the third strike on a batter, the batter may try to reach first as if the ball was hit in the field of play.

The pitcher is still credited with a strikeout, but if the batter reaches first before the defense can get the ball there he is safe at first. This means that it's possible to record more than three strikeouts in one inning - in the majors there are 74 pitchers who have recorded four in an inning.

Could be either the pitcher's or catcher's fault - the former if he threw a wild pitch, the latter if he did have butterfingers or just misjudgd the pitch.

Specifically that there is more solid evidence of liquid water via seasonal variance of saline minerals.

Maybe we can try to colonize mars when we figure out how to stop killing each other.

as soon as there are enough people on Mars, we'll just have another country to worry about.

interplanetary warfare, I wonder if this will mean colony drops and giant robots.

Well that'll be a while yet.

Mars would be very very isolationist to begin with.

Like- why bother with Earth.

That's their problem.

Not likely - Martian colonies will likely be dependent on interplanetary trade when starting out.

Can you say 'independent principality of mars'

What happens on earth doesn't affect them unless it directly interrupts their trade.

So they wouldn't care about ~90% of it.

Plus- interplanetary wars would not necessarily be Mars against Earth, but rather nations from Earth assisting their colonies against one another, or against insurrection/independence movements.

Since Mars would be more likely to have wars among-st itself before wars against Earth.

True - the colonial history of the Americas did go that way. On the other hand, I'd imagine it'd be alot easier for rival colonies to kill each other because of immediate dependency on critical life support systems.

the instant humans leave earth they tend to band together into nazi like dictatorships. I know this because I have studied animu to the extreme, and Olive, I'm pretty sure you're just trying to cover for your space nazi brethren for when they eventually try to overthrow the Earth

It'd be the scramble for Mars.

[up] Psh-aw.

I am against the notion of humanity automatically having the will to unify in order to go out into space.

In a way, I find it more likely that bodies like the EU would separate outwards when we have to leave Earth, because everyone will think of different places for suitable colonies.

It'll probably find some way of getting overridden, or someone will just ignore it leading others to ignore it too.

Eventually it becomes an excuse for everyone to drop it.

Something similar to how the League of Nations became irrelevant.
