@Ram: Yes.

This is something from my own beliefs and perspective that really, really bugs me about American fundamentalism.

@Seer: I think you're misreading me.

In no way am I saying that I think it is okay that homosexual acts are presented as sinful.

was going to write more but that's prolly enough for now

I myself find it odd that the Bible is so highly idolized as it is over here.

Of course.

I am not a believer, so my viewpoint is skewed.

But it's just always struck me as strange.

I'm really just dissatisfied with the Church on a personal basis, and with my own faith or lack thereof.

I just don't think I've ever gotten a sense of fulfilment from it. I'm a Catholic out of habit more than anything.

What if there’s no better word than just not saying anything?

it feels like people have been conditioned to accept all of what it teaches because they have been told it is infallible

that is a huge problem

it discourages questions people, especially younger people, may have about the bible

they may see a passage they themselves may not agree with and be shouted down for believing that because the bible is infallible, because the bible is the word of God and God is infallible

I am aware this does not happen in most churches but I am not talking about most churches

@Seer: my sick mind is making me leap all over the place, forgive me

just the sort of sarcastic response made me read an implication that I guess wasn't there

@Ram: Well, it is The Holy Text. So on that level I can understand.

@Norm: Of course we all have moments of self reflection, and thinking about what we believe, etc. no matter what our beliefs or lack of them.

I guess we've just got to trust we can find our own answers in the end.

@Box: I cannot agree with what you've just posted more.

I may stop posting hereon as while I did like finding out people's viewpoints and whatnot, my sick mind can't keep up with so many people

actually now that i think about it, a somewhat silly question for pruh

what was your initial reaction to SMT's... less than flattering portrayal of YHWH, given that you are christian

im guessing its something like "its just a vidya game dood" but i am somewhat curious

My dad says churches are controlling, but we keep a bible around.

We don't read it though.

okay no wait I'm super willing to talk about this

story time

My first reaction when first exposed to what would become my favourite video game series of all time I can remember word for word. It was even the game in that series that would become my favourite (Nocturne). It was this:

"Well that's fucking dumb."

And to be fair on little old me, the thing I was reading was written fairly poorly so it did sound kind of dumb. Based more around making it sound "awesome" than any actual plot for one thing.

But anyway yeah I learnt some more stuff, cut out a whole bunch here get to your question

For a long time I actually didn't want to play II for that reason. Hearing that God was the endboss on all three routes sounded like a dumb decision to be made to be honest, and just being done for the sake of a generic, boring "man, fuck God". But again, I think that was because I was reading it as summarised by bad sources.

And looking at how it actually is, I can get what they were going for. He is the God of Law, being written from a point of super Literalism, and it works for the themes of the game.

Both of these shit sources were tvtropes by the by.

Like, to compare to another example where it actually does seem to be bad... Hm...

Salvation War. There's a good one. From what i saw of that, it was basically thematic schlock, poorly written, etc, that was doing what it was doing for an unintelligent attack on religion of the intellectual level of an "enlightened internet quote maker"

I would go on a long thing about religion.

But I won't.

I will however say that looking back at my younger years, I fell like I was brainwashed.

No exaggeration there.

He's not though.

That's something that has been a problem with SMT fans, particularly earlier in the series.

Thinking in terms of good and evil is incorrect in SMT. God is not the source of evil, neither is Lucifer. They are archetypes.

God is Law.

Lucifer is Chaos.

And they reflect the other.

Bcom Since: Jun, 2014
#447471: Sep 7th 2015 at 8:06:30 PM

good and bad things can come from both chaos and law. It's just that they (god and lucifer/satan/ who ever) represent the very extremes, and extremism is bad.

I was certainly not raised with the understanding of alternatives to the church. And the fact that I was finally confirmed in the church when I hadn't even started high school and possessed the reasoning of a child bothers me.

But the church is what we make it to be. Right now, it's not what I need. One day soon it might be.

@Seer: Oh no, I get that, but it's such a big thing/misconception for SMT that I feel like I have to say/clarify it.

Incidentally SMT is very big on Gnosticism.

oh man, i can imagine

nocturne, and really any smt game probably sounds pretty dumb if you emphasize the wrong things

"oh man its got a half demon nd hes super strong and he FIGHTS GOD WIF LOOCY FURR HOLY SHIT EPIC!!!1111"

i was drawn to the series because of the mythology and such

the lore is more important than demons throwing big spells at each other
