Yeah, I mean a disjointed plot can work if it's deliberate and well-crafted, but I didn't think Ponyo was either of those things. Plus the whole seeming a lot worse by comparison thing you mention.
Like how Cars wasn't a bad movie but it was awful in comparison to Pixar's other work at the time.

Oh also it was responsible for this "gift".
I'm not linking the English version because at least with this one I don't have to understand the lyrics.

Oh okay.
So the water wizard fucked ocean resulting in magic fish babbys one of which decided fuck this and ran away which caused the ocean to be...I don't know. It was an excuse to little mermaid it up.
Who here remembers Princess Mononoke? That was a good movie.
PM box is Closed, Indefinitely Friend Code: 3368-4181-6850I'd be okay with weird shit. You can make anything sound like weird shit if you put it bluntly enough.
But you just said all that, and yet they didn't do anything with it. We mostly just hung out with the tsunami survivors and did people-building scenes. And they were good people-building scenes, I guess, but it would have been really great if we got things other than people-building scenes.
Also, to me at least, it just sort of felt like the same people-building scene over and over
I never felt like it was actually going anywhere.
Which again, is fine if that's what you're aiming for and you execute it well. But...
Spirited Away is a Good Movie

@Tats: WELP
good luck
I hope none of them are serial killers
also I read that as ghouls for a second as was concerned
@Squid: Right, that'd make sense.
And yes, Ghibli always has great animation if nothing else. Even in Ponyo I could enjoy it just for the animation. The latter point should be a given in anything but insert Miyazaki talking about otaku gif here.
