Yup that sounds like Silent Hill.

There's rarely a sense of consistency in those games. Barely anything is explained, either.

Most of the time, the game builds up like it's going to use a jump scare

but nothing happens.

But when it DOES happen

you shit bricks

See, this is why Doom 3 sucks to me

it tries wayyyy too hard to be all uber-atmospheric and SCAREEYY

The original does have atmosphere, but really... it's a pretty damn silly game. There are MIDI versions of Slayer songs, FFS. The game threatens you if you try to quit, it's pretty funny

Carrying around fifty thousand guns that all can make paste out of demons

is not what I'd call very scary

Not to mention that it's highly, highly linear and cramped... and dark to the point of being irritating.

Like what kind of idiot wouldn't just duct-tape the flashlight to his gun

like really

Why wouldn't he just have a flashlight mounted on his shoulder

this is the future, right?

Plus, you never have to worry about running out of ammo. EVER.

Dude, I LOVE Doom. Doom is awesome because it doesn't pretend to be anything it's not.

There actually is a Doom 3 mod that duct-tapes your flashlight to your gun.

I mean, on one hand, it makes it more frantic, you have to switch from your giant gun to your flashlight just to see what's in front of you.

but on the other hand, it's just annoying cause I really have nothing to fear

I guess I would on higher difficulties but whatever

Yup, that's what I think

I actually find it surprising how well the old Doom games have aged

Since the Steam releases have implemented mouse-looking, I believe

The levels are pretty non-linear and vaguely Metroid-like

It gets a bit repetitive constantly hunting for keycards though

No, I get you, it's back-tracking

but Doom has really tight level design with levels packed with secrets

That's what's nice about old school shooters: the secrets

yeah

i think i've realized why i haven't liked that, and it's the tightness of it

like in metroid prime the world felt vast (as much as it could've been in 2001), not compressed

there, i didn't mind it

[up] if you don't get back in time, will it be okay if we continue tomorrow?

Also, I really like Final Fantasy VII

but I think I'll just re-purchase it from PSN since the PC port is bollocks

as good as the game is

The PC port isn't that bad.

I'm playing it right now.

It's only bollocks because the game is CLEARLY not meant for the keyboard. It feels clunky as hell.

Those segments where I have to do these moves in sequence are nightmarish on keyboard.

Maybe I'm just used to keyboards but I like them a bit better than controllers.

Also it supports PC controllers.

Don't have PC controllers.

I'm relatively new to PC gaming, anyway. Only been doing it for a few years, whereas I've been console gaming nearly my entire life.

Plus, this is a laptop with cramped key space

You can connect a PS3 or XBox controller to a computer, and they'll work. You need to download something to map out the former first, though.
