That won't help.
One, the main problem with VII that keeps it from being the best Final Fantasy game (ignoring the garbled translation that confused everyone to no end) is that all the good stuff, while there is a lot of it, is kind of out of the way, and it suffers from pacing problems in addition to that — so it's incredibly easy to miss or misinterpret a vital piece of information, and even easier to go through the game and miss everyone's humanising dialogue chock-full of clever foreshadowing and subtle hints. So unless you go out of your way to explore every bit of dialogue tree (which I had to because my shitty memory card made me replay the game seventeen times), it's easy to miss a lot of what made the story, characters, setting, and even game design so great. From what I've seen of .hack games, they have largely the same format, and are even more slowly paced, so they kind of have the same problem. And for a game like VII, which isn't split up across games like .hack is, that's not something you can get away with.
Two, they'll still answer to Squeenix. Squeenix will call the shots, Squeenix will make the retcons, and Squeenix will have the final say as far as story goes.
Three, Crisis Core will never not exist. The damage has been done. Dirge might have been a worse game, but it had basically nothing to do with VII — which means it didn't undermine it quite like CC did. People will still have played it first, so the story is damaged for them beyond repair.
@Jam: Mail me your stuff before you die. I want that DMC collection first. Kthx.

MY SOUL IS DARK BUT MY HAIR IS COLORFUL — Brahian Pokémon Alchemist@Prom: HAHA I GEDDIT
@Trip: VII is dead. It died the day Square Pictures went under, the money that was going to go towards its HD remake went with it, they started pumping out low quality spinoffs and sucking Disney's cock (to be fair, though, it was a magnificent cock-sucking) to cover costs, and the internet started making parodies containing naught but hair/sword/emo jokes. I have accepted that long ago.
Just watch this a few times and pretend it's real.
It's crafted with far more love and enthusiasm than anything Square is gonna put out.
You wouldn't laugh if it were your games
that were getting shit on by designers and fangirls alike.
Dirge of Cerberus in a nutshell:
She's nineteen. She's just physically nine, so it's totes okay for Vincent, who is sixty-one and physically twenty-eight, to creep on her. Also he's still a virgin after all these years.
...God, I hate this game. I didn't think it was possible for me to hate something more than Sonic 06, but I guess I was wrong.
MY SOUL IS DARK BUT MY HAIR IS COLORFUL — Brahian Pokémon AlchemistO how the might have fallen.
That's not even scratching the surface of what's wrong with that game...
General consensus is X. But still.
Click the link above. It will entertain you at the very least.
I've been on a Zelda binge all week. Apart from Skyward Sword, they're all really fun, but they don't really have a story like VII does.
Maybe Half Life. Or Bioshock, I keep walking past it, but I never actually buy it.
I also got Personas 3 and 4, but have barely put a dent in them.
