I played as Rome.
Made peace with Alexander the Great who was the superpower at the time.
While I focused on trade and infrastructure, he built up an army, told me he didn't like all the roads and towns near his territory (even though I kind of need those to do trade with him) and declared war.
Kicked my sparsely defended ass until I gave him my two most prosperous cities.
Alexander is prick.
What if there’s no better word than just not saying anything? But I didn't mess with them. Hell I was their closest ally.
What if there’s no better word than just not saying anything? He literally told me "The only reason I'm going to war is proximity, which is as good a reason as any as far as I'm concerned. Buh-bye."
Where do you think the gold for his freaking army came from? He had like two mines to my nine.

What if there’s no better word than just not saying anything? You're a relatively weak militarily, but economically prosperous nation with valuable cities.
Real politik is what Alexander was doing.
He's A) Expanding his borders.
And B) Gaining wealthy cities.
At little cost militarily.
Also: The AI is a backstabbing scumbag.
