Just played a bit of Touhou for the first time — specifically, Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, since that's the one everyone always seems to be going on about. I have a few questions:
- Where the hell is my hitbox? It seems weirdly arbitrary the way some of these hits and misses are judged.
- What's the big deal about Cirno? I'm legitimately baffled. She just sort of shows up at the beginning, says generic boss things, and goes down thirty seconds later. Is it just one of those weird things, like with Matt and Zack, where they have maybe three lines total but become bizarrely popular for no apparent reason? I don't get it.
- What are the square things I've been collecting? What do they do?
(@Spaz) I'll answer these questions for you, unless I get ninja'd by someone.
- Your hitbox is the knot on the ribbon on your character's back. Keep that from getting hit, and you'll be fine. Unlike other games, this one doesn't specifically show it to you.
- Cirno is a recurring character in the series who makes some badass boasts (which are underwhelming when she first says them), and actually lives up to them in later games.
- Depends on what they are. Red ones are Power icons, which add to how much bullets you fire. Blue ones are for points, which give you extra lives at set increments (I think it's every 10 million points).
(@Second post) Shifting moves the balls in front of you so that they can focus on a single target more easily. Not useful for the homing shots (they hit anything anyway), but other shot types will benefit from this focus.

And it's so easy when you're evil... This is the life for me, the Devil tips his hat to me...Chibi to the rescue.
1] 6 does not have a hitbox that is vissible. You need a patch to mske it vissible. Normally I have this, but not on comp.
2]I do not know or understand it. Ensemble Dark Horse at it's finest.
3] what game said.
