It's very original and entertaining indie wrestling.
They have interesting and different characters like the Colonial who are a group of ant-wrestlers (Fire, Soldier, Green, Assail Ant (otherwise known as fat Ant)), evil wrestlers (Ultramantis Black, Hallowicked, and Frightmare) who can sometimes be good (a la the Undertaker), stereotypical 50s high school sports athletes (like Mr. Touchdown, and Dash Hatfield), etc.
They put on great matches and sometimes bring in guest talent that really adds to the show. Check out the Colony vs. the Young Bucks
or the 1-2-3 Kid (yes they brought him back) v. Amazing Red v. Frightmare v. Obariyon.
They have insane angles as well. For example, the whole current situation involves a massive shady corporation purchasing Chikara and shutting it down. But behind the scene Archibald Peck has gone back in time and returned via a "back-fist to the future" by Chikara Champion Eddie Kingston. Kingston, who was the first and only Chikara Grand Champion, was about to tap out to Chikara Special (an unreversable submission maneuver) that Icarus had locked in during the last Chikara show (Anniversario: Never Compromise). The lights went out, security cleared the ring and started dismantling the set.
On top of this, there were angles happening with most of the major players in the company involving the Titor Conglomerate (the evil corporation). Mike Quackenbush, the founder of Chikara and the head guy, was pushed out. The Colony had been split up because Wink Vavasseur (the head of Titor) thought they'd draw better if they put some of them in a team with their archnemesises. He also brought in the Colonial X-Treme Force (which was a play on bringing in more characters to sell more merchandise and a total satire of consumerist culture).
Beyond the angles, they are pretty creative with their championships and theme nights which are heavily inspired by Mexican and Japanese wrestling. They have an annual 2-night King of Trios tournament where they have six man matches to determine the winner. They have the Young Lions Cup which is an annual tournament to win the Cup, however it is defended throughout the year by the winner and can be won by a challenger.
If you want to get caught up with the current stuff since they stopped you can go to watched the Wrestling Is...
channel on Youtube. Wrestling Is... (art, fun, respect, etc) are regional promotions with the look-and-feel of Chikara using some of the same wrestlers, but not Chikara promotions.

A. Buy Chikara DV Ds from their website (I haven't but I really recommend this. they deserve every penny)
