Dr. Nikola is really interesting. Only took a chapter of Hatteras being all- "Look this woman is to be my wife! I am the luckiest man ever!" before we actually see the real star after the Prologue.
I query whether Tropes has a page for this book.
Turns out it doesn't.
This is sad.

It's just that he wouldn't want some other version of him that looks exactly like him running around. One of them would have to get rid of the red longcoat to be able to tell them apart. And he really, really likes the red longcoat.

Dr. Antonio Nikola: The first conversation Hatteras has with him goes a little like this-
Nikola: "Hello, Mr Hatteras! Wouldn't you agree that the limitations of the fool are the birth gifts of the wise?"
Hatteras: "Wh-" -a little creeped because he does not know this man-
Nikola: "I think you'll allow that half of the world is born for the other half to prey upon!"
Hatteras: -does not know what to even say-
