Zaitoma was unaffected. His eyes came slowly back into focus, and his gaze settled on the man who had spoken to him. After narrowing his eyes at him for a few second, the man got up, and slowly walked out onto the field, holding himself high, defiant. When he got to the field, he promptly turned around and drew his sword, holding it limply by his side.

"Actions speak louder than words, eh? Then let us speak with only actions. Come. I grow bored of normal conversation," the impatient man said, twirling his sword in his left hand while tapping his leg with the other. His eyes began to glaze over, as he once again grew bored, because nothing was happening.

"Prove to me you know how to use your weapon, then", was the only reply. Dylinnil drew his own weapon, a greatsword, then held it in a defensive stance, the blade relatively horizontal, feet partly braced.

His body tensed, and he stared Zaitoma down with an analytical glare only adding to the previous point: 'Your move.'

Zaitoma nodded, but he continued to stand there, twirling his sword. His eyes boredly examined the Bosmer's stance, and then he nodded again. "Alright." This one grunt was the last thing Zaitoma said before going on what could only be called 'the offensive.'

With a guttural roar, completely out of the blue, Zaitoma sprang forward, sprinting towards the elf as fast as he could. Then, when he was only about ten feet away, Zaitoma crouched and sprang into a rugby tackle, aiming for Dylinnil's legs.

To his credit, Zaitoma's tackle did have merit. Dylinnil wasn't expecting a move so... unorthodox, partially because it defeated the entire point. He had been poised to evade any attack given to a point, but by reflex was forced to rely on backing up alone.

As he started to jump forward, Dylinnil hopped back, attemting to gain distance from the Imperials tackle.

It almost worked; the tackle itself hit somewhere around his legs, which coupled with the backward momentum sent Dylinnil down on his back, grip still on the greatsword which stayed near his torso.

A compromising position indeed..., he found himself quickly musing as he raced to stand.

Zaitoma was caught off-balance as well, but he he was less off-balance thatn Dyrinnil. The warrior eventually got to his feet again, pointing his sword at Dyrinnil. He sank to one knee, planting the edge of his sword on Dyrinnil's neck. "Don't suppose this means I win, does it." It was a statement, not an answer.

And still he sounded bored.

"I'm not paying you anything for that jewel. Even if I had the intention to there is no way I could raise that kind of money... Wait, did you steal the money needed to buy that horrible thing!?" asked Aina, getting indignant once again.

"No, it's from a research grant." Jeane said, pronouncing the last bit slowly. "It's money I get from my sponsor in the College. And he's gonna get really mad if he ever finds out that money was just wasted like this!" she pleaded.

But it didn't really seem like the Nord woman cared about that very much. Frustration setting in, Jeane decided to try a different method. "I can't let you break it unless I get my money back!"

The response was rewarded with a 'No.', not in words but by action. First his sword arm was moved outside the intended position, then his torso was brought forward and back out with surprising force, enough to send him reeling back down again.

"Your hubris is not lost on me", Dylinnil mused, standing up and walking around him, waiting for him to stand. "All i see is a child, playing in the dirt with a stick."

He had stepped far enough away to keep himself from suffering the same fate as before, but did not make a move.

Please note that despite Dylinnil being a PC, i'm treating him as more of a GMPC/NPC due to the test. Dylinnil probably would've been smarter and submitted had the circumstances been anything but this.

"It's not my fault that you spent so much coin on on a shiny black rock! And weren't you going to do it anyway since you realized what a horrible thing you did to elf trapped inside?" asked Aina, dreading the prospect of raising enough money to pay for that soul gem.

Zaitoma steadied himself about ten feet away from Dylinnil, brushing his armor. "Watch the armor. Made it m'self." He sounded terribly indignant.

The warrior, this outburst of emotion over, got into a favorable fighting position, twirling his sword a few times in his hands. His body swayed slowly side-to-side, in an almost hypnotic fashion. When Zaitoma spoke next, his voice was...different.

"Come now. This quabble is unnecessary. In a normal circumstance, your head would be rolling on the floor by this point. You are still standing merely because this is a test," the warrior said, his voice changing from a guttural growl to a calm, sensible-sounding one. Shall we call the duel even?

"No! I only improv'd that! I wasn't planning on studying the durability of Soul Gems for at least a year! This experiment was meant to test the carrying capacity of Black Soul Gems! I needed five. I was given enough to pay for five. Now I'm going to have only four, and what do you think Phinis is going to ask when I write back and ask him for another grand to pay for a new Black Soul Gem? Probably where the other one went. And what am I going to tell him? That I let some ignorant Nord smash it with a hammer?"

She took a deep breath. Cold air, like the crypt. Cold air, like the crypt. Slow down. The cold air hurts. Slow down, breathe calmly. Breathe like the shells. The air is cold. The air is cold. She exhaled, and took calmer, more controlled breaths until it no longer felt like her heart was angrily shaking her rib cage.

"I'm sorry, that was unprofessional. It's just when I left, there was word amongst the other professors that Phinis had me in mind for promotion to personal apprentice. I was so excited. I mean, the things I could learn from him! But now, if I tell him I messed this up, when I was the one who proposed it... Agh, he's gonna kill me!"

"No.", was Dylinnils curt reply. "You have been told to demonstrate skill in using that blade and you have failed to do so. You'll sooner be sent back to whatever sorry life you led before than allowed into Jorrvaskr, at this rate. I'll repeat myself once more: You have a blade. Use it."

Voice of the Emperor's being treated as a very high persuasion attempt, but in this instance it has no effect because Zaitoma is trying to stop the one thing the entire test and his entering the Companions relies on. You may be able to convince your way out of a fight, but when you need to fight, it doesn't do anything but harm you.

Zaitoma was done with his games. "Very well. I shall show you what I can do." He gripped his sword tighter in his hands, stood there breathing for a few seconds, and then charged again. The roar was absent from this charge, and it was a slower one, but it could still be considered a charge. When Zaitoma reached Dylinnil, he faked left and then quickly spun in place, heading for Dylinnil's right side, following up with a hard stab.

Having opted to remain silent in the arguement that ensued it was now that Cirroc saw an opportunity

"If we get out of here together I'll replace the gem for you." What am I saying? "I might even be able to help release the elf's soul" he spoke whispering in an attempt to avoid his words reaching the ear of the guard. Immediately he was unsure of the idea How would I manage to keep a promise like that in this state?

I don't know what I'd be getting into with these people. The only insight I've gleaned from them is of the Breton...

...the Breton that is a powerful necromancer performing study into the nature of Black Soul Gems, that may have already committed murder in pursuit of her research with the justification that she felt her victim was to cruel and useless to deserve passage into the afterlife.

That seems to be playing along with the Nord woman's demands only because it would provide an interesting experiment, while speaking in such a childish tone as to suggest mockery of the situation she finds herself in and all involved.

Why in Oblivion would I offer to indebt myself to them?!

No, I can't think like that. I'm dead if I stay here

He was well aware that his own paranoia may have been bringing him to panic. Although he was a skilled Conjurer himself necromancy was not something he wanted to trifle with. However, the Breton had claimed to be a researcher from the College of Winterhold, he understood the most horrific aspects of necromancy belonged to the outcasts and the extremists.

"Okay..." another deep sigh followed as he began to think.

Soul gems are frequently traded throughout Tamriel. Finding what the necromancer needs won't be a problem and if it must be paid for a few hundred gold was less than a days work when you understood how to get it. I have no idea how a soul would be released from a gem but its clear they aren't familiar with such a task either, so long as I can manage to convince them it was a success I'm safe. While the Nord woman's desire to smash the damn thing may prove useful in that regard I have to admit that keeping the gem intact would save me the trouble of replacing it. In the event things get rough cunning or even combat had always been something to fall back on in the past. Right now I just need to focus on escaping, I'll figure it all out later.

Awaiting an answer the next response came instead from the approaching guard "Feeling talkative today Altmer? Perhaps you'd like to share some stories with us." Cirroc looked on as guards once again entered the women's cell along with his own, presumably having now realized the mage's ease in freeing herself from the gag.

An explaniation for Cirroc's desperation in escaping should be coming in my next post. If the women understandably aren't as intent on making what would likely be a violent prison break he'll have a back up plan prepared. Also, in universe Alternate Character Interpretation on Jeane

An old man and two warriors travel by carriage down a cold road. The old man breathes deep and spits.

"We are late." the old man complains "We should have been in Whiterun two days ago."

The smaller of the two warriors, Vincent, contemplates caving in the old man's face. The thought passes quickly, the old man isn't assigning blame just talking to pass the time and, after all, the old man was paying Vincent to escort him. "It's better to be late than to be dead. The main road would be easy pickings for bandits. The side paths were safer."

"Safe? You call being attacked by a troll safe? Ha!"

The larger warrior, a redguard, decides to speak, "We killed it though, it was nice and easy." he barks out a laugh "dumb thing was dancing really nice after we put a torch to him, singing too.."

The mental image would be kinda funny, Vincent thinks, if the damned beast hadn't crushed his shield. "This is where I split off. I can see an imperial patrol up ahead, so you don't need to watch out for trolls or bandits anymore. I will take those 40 septims now." The old man and the redguard were good company, but he rather not have to deal with the patrols. No guard had arrested him in the four years of being a caravan escort, but every time a guard looked his way he could feel his blood freeze and visions of the chopping block flooded his mind.

The old man held out his hand and passed the 40 septims. Vincent gave them both a nod and walked a bit into the woods and stripped out of his armor and put on his town clothes. Having shoved his armor and dented shield into his bag, replaced his mace on one hip and his sword on the other, and wrapped a cloth around the lower half of his face, he began the walk to Whiterun.

Walking towards the gate confirms the impression he had from far away, the place is strong. Thick walls and a thick gate, the best type of place to defend and the worse kind to capture. He spots the gate guard and after taking a moment to catch his breath he walks up holding up three septims and asks an important question.

"Can you tell me where your blacksmiths are?"

"What!? You will? You can!? Oh thank you thank you thank you, mister!"

Guards closed in on poor Jeane, looking like they'd had just about enough of the little mage's uproarious antics. Certainly not a good sign for Jeane. Not that she cared, mind you. She'd never really been one to pay attention to such matters. As a matter of fact, she finally only shut her face when the guard's shadow blotted out what little light there still was in their cozy dungeon. She turned to him.

"Somethin' wrong, officer?"

The guards wordlessly opened the door to the cell of the three troublemakers wordlessly and then helped them get to their feet "Come now, you're about to receive the Jarl's judgment"

One of the guards however looked at Jeane and then at Cirroc in another cell and asked her "Is that man an accomplice of yours?"

Dylinnil's reflexes won out this time, partially; he jumped back at the fake, coming back in just at the start of the stab. He got hit this time, though; a cut in his arm somewhere between beep and shallow, just shallow enough not to be serious.

The tradeoff for this was an outward swing from his greatsword; with great speed it came up from Zaitoma's bottom right, aiming to diagonally gut him. The sweep itself was tucked in, trading a two handed weapons reach for speed, enough to test the Imperial with and get back into position quikly enough. Dylinnil wasn't going to kill, after all; otherwise he would've taken a shot at chopping the arm clean off.

The guard took the gold, nodding to the gate. "Lots of smithy's just past the gate, traveller. Warmaiden's on the right, just inside, but they've been busy foging steel for the Imperial Legion. Check on up a bit farther for a less crowded smithy, and you might get lucky if you're looking for quality material. Just keep yourself out of trouble while you're here."

We've got a travelling smith in a nameless shop; giving their player something to do would be appreciated, although they may or may not be in a bit of a low activity stretch right now. Your choice, in the end, i'm not forcing you either way.

Zaitoma's eyes widened slightly as he watched the blade arc towards him, and everything seemed to go into slow-motion as he quickly formulated a plan. Just as quickly, Zaitoma began to step to the left, doing a spin as he did so to get his weapon back into where he could block. This spin also gave his swing more momentum, as he swung downwards, directly towards the greatsword. This strike, if it connected, would most likely knock Dylinnil off-balance, and put him in position for another potential finisher.

When he opened the door to the tavern and the sound of the chattering patrons hit him he smiled, it reminded him of the military camps where he had found many comrades during the Great War with the Alderi Dominion.

He looked around and seeing as most spots where occupied he walked over to a table with an Argonian. "Mind if I sit with you here?" He asked
