I love the books, so I'm pretty pumped that going by the trailers its going to be a pretty good film. Woola looks EXACTLY like how I pictured him, haha! And the airships are perfection! Geek squee!

Interesting that a Thern shows up in the trailer, and that it looks like they are showing Dejah Thoris taking the trip down the river Iss to the valley Dor - both scenes from the second book. I guess they are combining the first and second books, which I can forgive because frankly the plots are simple enough to pull that off without cutting too much.

To me this looks very good. I just hope the fact that this inspired every sci-fi fantasy film including Avatar doesn't turn audiences off.

Why do I see this getting comparisons to Green Lantern?

In what way does this resemble Green Lantern?

The main alien character looks an awful lot like the alien (I forget which one) from that movie. And the excessive CGI here resembles the excessive CGI from that movie.

Eh, I'm still gonna watch this. Eventually.

I'd think it would get more comparisons to Avatar, though.

[up][up]Interestingly enough, the Green Lantern comics were in part inspired by the John Carter books, and borrowed heavily from the old pulp covers of the series. So that alien from Green Lantern resembles the Green Martians because its original design was somewhat inspired by the Green Martians.

As for "excessive CGI", well, what do you expect? It would be damn hard to handle large battles involving six-legged horses and four-armed men any other way. In fact, one reason why they haven't made this movie yet, despite the huge popularity of the books (though we remember him for Tarzan today, John Carter of Mars was Burrough's original hit and inspired just about everything that came afterwards science fiction wise)was the fact that we didn't have the technology to pull it off properly up until recently.

I don't know anything about the book, but the trailer looks unpromising. Mighty Whitey in an alien civilization?

Yeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaah boyyyeeeeeee

I hope this doesn't blow. We could use more pulp epics.

Hopefully the masses will be convinced to flock to it. And considering that this project most likely wears the Development Hell crown, it deserves to be successful.

Anyway, I'm excited. Barsoom looks unbelievably awesome and just plain real, which is more than I can say for...oh, you probably know.

Yeah so I was sitting around with the family flicking through news stations when this trailer popped up on ET.

Family's reaction.

"Why is Disney copying Avatar?"

Facepalm. I then went on to explain for a good half hour what John Carter is about.

We then went and watched Dr.Who.

You will never love a women as much as George Lucas hates his fans.

[up][up][up][up]Basically yes, but its justified pretty nicely - his strength comes from the fact that Martian gravity is less than Earth's, so he is stronger than anybody else on the planet Mars. He's basically a Conan The Barbarian figure throughout the books - going around doing good deeds and overthrowing evil scientists and warlords - all for the love of Dejah Thoris, Princess of Helium.

It's probably worth reading the books before seeing the movie - they are simple enough that you can polish them off over the weekend, and I'm fairly sure that you can find them for free on the internet because the copyright has long since expired.

The John Carter books are wonderfully imaginative, but they are a product of their era; they tend to be kind of formulaic, with Carter ending up having to rescue Dejah Thoris from something or other (Burroughs Pellucidar books were similar in this way). I always found it interesting that you were never entirely sure just what the hell Carter was; even on Earth, he was functionally immortal and had no knowledge of his past beyond a certain point. Burroughs just dashes off that information in the first book, and never even makes it a story point, at least to my knowledge.

I'm confident that this will be a good movie. After all, Andrew Stanton is directing.

I had no knowledge who John Carter was until I saw this trailer. (embarrasingly, I didn't know anything of Burrough's work outside of Tarzan).

But this trailer pretty much blew my mind, the visuals, the music, the general feel of it just made me want to see this movie. I hope it is not a case of great trailer/crap film (Like The Time Machine remake).

I'll definitely see it in the cinemas.

It's not The Time Machine. It's been testing very well and Stanton wouldn't release it unless it was the highest quality (in fact, much of the budget problems have been him improving the film).

As for Stanton being unproven (which has been a case of uproar in Hollywood), remember that besides his two Oscars that Wall E was the most expensive animated feature at the time of release (after sending five years in production and still having scenes be worked on three months before opening) and it still became a big hit for Disney.
