Because, hey, Canada needs some love as well.

Now, then, as a Yank to the Canadians, what has Stephen Harper done as Prime Minister, what were the top parties and how did the general election turn out this year?

The NDP has now been kind of wishy washy on whether they want to call an early election, probably because they would lose most of their seats if one happens.

Ontario slaps 25% tax increase to exports of electricity to the US.

Not surprised this happened, even if the other guy keeps delaying his.

Honestly at this point it's out of their hands.

The Conservatives will want one ASAP since Trump and Carney have cause their lead to reduce significantly. They'll want it triggered while they are still in a position to win.

Carney will want one because he can't keep ruling as PM unelected for long, and he wants to still benefit from being "the new guy".

As frankly, has been too often the tale under Singh, the NDP's lack of action and wishywashy attitude cost them the initiative.

Which certainly sucks considering we're at a period of history where we badly need decisive action.

Just a dumb question. In Canada, is it allowed for the PM to not be a sitting MP? I'm not sure how that works.

[up]No, it's not allowed. There's a reason the Prime Minister always run in a "safe" riding that's almost certainly guaranteed to be won.

And if an important person, like a party leader or something, does manage to lose their riding, they pull this thing called "parachuting" where I guess they get moved to another district at the expense of the Member of Parliament who was already there so they can be the MP for that place, thus they are still an MP and can lead their party in Parliament. The exact mechanics are unclear to me.

[up]I've heard that one. The loyal, dutiful MP who was assigned to their riding resigns and the PM stands for election. Since it's a safe riding, the voters in said riding will not refuse to be a landing platform for some out-of-town PM.

Even if it'd be hilarious for a parachute candidate to be shot down.

[up]No, it's not allowed. There's a reason the Prime Minister always run in a "safe" riding that's almost certainly guaranteed to be won.

This is actually totally, entirely, incorrect.

There is no requirement for the PM to be a sitting MP.

There's been multiple non MP P Ms before. Caldwell (the 3rd PM) was a Senator, not an MP. As was Mackenzie Bowell (the fifth PM). Both replaced P Ms who died in office.

Both Mackenzy King and John Turner both were P Ms without being either M Ps or Senators. (And Turner was the guy who like Carney, replaced Trudeau Sr. History repeats). Mackenzy King, meanwhile, lost his seat, but his party still won the election, making him an non-MP PM. He won a by-election after a few weeks and got a seat. This happened to him twice.

To quote the other wiki

While there is no legal requirement for the prime minister to be an MP, for practical and political reasons the prime minister is expected to win a seat very promptly. However, in rare circumstances individuals who are not sitting members of the House of Commons have been appointed to the position of prime minister.

The reason the PM runs a "safe" riding is because logistically, the party leader doesn't have the time to campaign locally, the way a local MP does, and second because your party leader not winning his seat is deeply humiliating for a party.

US announces double of the planned 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum as a retaliatory measure against Ontario's 25% tax increase on electricity exports.

Are the steel and aluminum plants even in Ontario?

Carney got Marco Mendicino to work with him.

Some people online (a prof I know who's based in Tokyo is also against this) are against him being involved due to contributing to the "broken immigration system".

Seeing “elbows up” as a way to resist Trump’s policies. It’s embraced by most people, although some Canadians are embarrassed by it and call people doing it as virtue signallers (sarcastically).

Those same people decry the Liberals/NDP for the tariff predicament the country is in.

As of now CIBC's poll tracker gives the Liberals more than 50% chance to win an election and a liberal majority as the most likely outcome at 34%.

If correct this makes an insane shift since January where the Liberals were heading for a historical loss.

Obviously.

That and the NDP being in a medical coma (The Liberals seem to be siphoning heavily from the NDP and Conservatives), Poilievre's obvious MAGA ties and the fact he has nothing on offer since his entire platform was "not being Trudeau".
