Because, hey, Canada needs some love as well.

Now, then, as a Yank to the Canadians, what has Stephen Harper done as Prime Minister, what were the top parties and how did the general election turn out this year?

Trudeau announced a 250 dollar rebate cheque to help families this year. IIRC, he announced this while in Sharon, Ontario.

People are asking where the money’s coming from. Others suggested new elections just to get competent leadership.

Trudeau condemned the violence in an anti-NATO march in Montreal. There are no reports of antisemitism despite him saying it.

Ottawa officially apologizes for overseeing the deaths of Nunavik sled dogs under RCMP watch. Thing is using them is one way for the Inuit and other communities up in the north to help survive.

Donald Trump is threatening an immediate 25% tariff on all Canadian and Mexican goods entering the US on his first day of office as "punishment" for the flow of drugs and migrants through the borders.

To keep it to the Canadian segment of the conversation, it baffles me how many Canadians actually cheer for that decision or blame Trudeau for it.

Is there even that much illicit stuff crossing the US-Canada boarder?

I'm sure there's some, but there's never been a serious push to lock down the boarder more than it already is, which is not very locked down at all.

Well considering things aren't doing so well in the Canadian side of things like groceries and his decision to cut down on international students...

[up][up]According to the article I linked, less than 1% of the illicit traffic between the US and Mexico.

Did he try something like this before, and the response was to threaten to tariff all goods coming from red states?

[up][up] Figured it was something on that scale.

People underestimate how much boarder security can come from the country on the other side being economically and politically stable.

If anything, I bet there are more drugs and migrants (and weapons, as [up] mentions) going into Canada from the US than the other way around.

In any case, the obvious solution is not tariffs, it's cooperation to tighten security. It's obvious that the real motivation behind Trump's statement is punishment for not being subservient enough and not supporting his claims that he won the 2020 elections.

The two words that best describe Trudeau are "Stupid" and "Fuckwit."

I have no idea how or why he still has his job.

His idea of being helpful is dropping the GST (but only for a bit - can't kill that golden goose after all!) and a $200 cheque.

That'll buy most people a weeks' worth of groceries.

Given that Mexico threatened to implement tariffs on its own, how likely is Canada to do the same if the tariffs do happen?

Trudeau intends to meet with the provincial prime ministers tomorrow to make a decision on the matter. We'll probably see a result to that soon.

I'm wondering how likely they are to even be implemented in the first place. Apparently, a tariff this large requires congressional approval to pass. As well as the fact that you-know-who has promised massive tariffs before in his first term yet never followed through on.

Guess I'll have to still ponder if it's worth coming back considering the housing market's bad and the rent in Ottawa is bad with lowest so far at 1,000 dollars per month.

All I know is that even some parts of the Liberal Party want Trudeau to step down. Freeland leaving his cabinet was a major warning already.
