The repeated beats of hammers and saws doing their work filled the air around the Imperial Floral Review theater as remodeling neared completion. Ever since the defeat of the last demonic forces in the late 1920s, need for the troupe had decreased. After demobilization of the combat arm while the Imperial forces focused on other things, the troupe had become just for performance purposes. Soon after that the original members had moved on, including commander Ogami. Teito had expanded rapidly since the turn of the decade and the theater had been a bit neglected. But now the theater was being restored fully and the Imperial Floral Combat Troupe reactivated.

At least in theory this was due to the growing tensions between the Great Powers. Other nations had developed fighting armor but Japan's was still considering cutting edge. Any advantage Japan could have in a future conflict was worth having the government claimed. Yet the covert signs that the dark forces were returning to this world was the true reason. For now it was best kept secret until things became more serious.

The government's agents had been busy recruiting likely candidates across the globe, as they had back in the previous decade. Unlike then the commander had been selected ahead of time - a promising young woman whose father happened to be a general with some pull with regards to the project. She'd trained in various martial arts forms, competed against male army cadets and learned strategy from her father's old academy textbooks. Now she had an official rank in the Imperial Army but thought she'd been handed a rather peculiar assignment. After meeting with members of the previous Teito unit she thought she understood what it was about but had little time to get used to even her new office.

Captain Kirie Yamashita was supposed to begin meeting the recruits for the new unit today. Even as the theater's finishing touches were completed they should be arriving, according to her superiors. She really hoped they'd be able to find their way to the theater at least. It would be a pain to have to go hunt them down in the metropolis that was Japan's imperial capital.

"And then there's this.." she thought aloud, glancing down at the stack of scripts on her desk. A musical. She'd never acted in her life, and now she was expected to do that in addition to her command responsibilities. Such a strange assignment.

In order to be qualified for a unit such as the Imperial Floral Combat Troupe, one needs to have years of experience, a firm head on their shoulders, the skills to triumph over dire predicaments, and be prepared to lay down one's life for the sake of the greater good. Or, in Isabella Prestissimo's case, have a rich daddy with connections and a poor grasp on the consequences of his actions.

Bella had always seen herself as a beacon of attractiveness. Sure, she was only fourteen years old, but way too many people didn't get into the acting business until they were only a few years from fizzing out on the looks department. As part of this Floral Combat thingamabob, she could achieve her dream of perfoming before an audience and gaining their utter admiration. This was her chance to shine amongst the stars, and become an idol to the rest of the world! ...Also, some stuff about fighting. She actually liked a bloody scrap now and then, so she didn't pay attention to that part.

Today would be the first day that Bella would actually be a part of this Troupe. Wearing her fanciest yellow dress, she was currently heading to the theatre on foot. While daddy did offer her a lift, this gave her time to put her thoughts together, and think about just how much she'd be willing to suck up to the guy in charge to get a starring role.

Yuna Weinberg was very, very excited. Her Aunt Cheiron had told her stories about the New York Combat Revue she was in for as long as the girl could listen—about how they'd all become so close, and fought demons, and even saved the world! Even with occasional visits from the other Revue members, she still couldn't quite imagine it properly. She had been overjoyed to learn that she was scouted for a new one, although a bit nervous that it was in Japan and not America. Auntie had just laughed and said that she would have the opposite experience her commander had had—with the added bonus that they were actually expecting /her/, and not anyone else, the older lawyer had added with a glint in her eye.

Blowing her bright orange hair (seriously, how had she gotten that gene?) out of her equally bright eyes, Yuna Weinberg managed to find her way to the Imperial Capital without a huge amount of help—the map Cheiron had given her helped a lot. There were a few other skills Auntie had given her, too, she mused. She was no pro at acting, but she did know how to handle a whip. Absentmindedly, she had stopped in front of the Revue building's door, pulling absentmindedly at a lock of hair as she considered how she was going to pull off the whole 'acting' thing.

"Hello?" she called out in slightly accented Japanese. "Yuna Weinberg, here for the Kagekidan..." Yuna paused, then repeated the message in English, just in case.

In the game, Cheiron's main weapon is a whip. Yuna needs a Giant Weapon to attack with (for her Athletics skill, since her weapon is summoning), so if it's necessary I figured she could make some kind of flail.

Despite the construction work being undertaken at the Imperial Floral Revue's combination theater, home and headquarters, there were still a few soldiers around. The kagekidan being under the Imperial Army's jurisdiction this was simply common sense to the powers that be. A couple of soldiers with rifles stood guard at the enrtance gate but were more interested in making small talk with each other than actually focusing fully on sentry duty. People coming in and out was pretty normal, and the soldiers had been informed that new members of the unit would be arriving. Granted no one had told them what these ladies looked like. So when one of them spotted Bella in the distance, he was unaware of the fact that she was fairly young and a member of the new Teito force.

"Hey, some gaijin there.. looks pretty," the young soldier on the right remarked, nodding in the general direction.

"Looks like she's coming this way," the other private nodded, and visibly straightened his posture in the hopes of looking more impressive.

The brown skinned girl hadn't been totally unnoticed by those already at the Revue's HQ/Theater. A number of the laborers had stared as she approached the building, but ultimately went back to their work. Even the soldiers at the front gate had simply let her pass after looking at her kind of weird. Most importantly the commander had noticed the redhead's approach and recognized her from one of the dossiers her subordinates had given to her. Normally it would fall to those subordinates to go meet the recruits as they arrived, but at the moment they were nowhere to be found. Reminding herself to go scold them later Kirie went downstairs to go meet her first new teammate at the front door.

As she descended the stairs Kirie passed by portraits of the Teito Revue's former members, put up to give the place a connection to its storied past. After stopping to gaze upon the last commander of the force, Ichiro Oogami, she wondered whether she'd really be able to handle this. It was a pretty big responsibility after all.. on the other hand, it was a chance to prove she was more than just her father's daughter. Kirie straightened her army uniform using the relfection in the portrait's glass, then tried to get her bangs in order before going to the door. If nothing else she wanted to look professional for this first encounter with her first teammate to arrive.

When at last she did reach the door she could hear the girl speaking Japanese. That was a relief - Kirie's English was good, but she didn't have much confidence in her ability to speak it. Having Yuna speak Japanese was going to make everything else about this job much more simple. The newly minted captain opened the door and smiled as she came face to face with Yuna. "Weinberg-san," she began, taking great care to pronounce the name at least somewhat correctly, "You're expected. Please come in, there's much to talk about... I'm Kirie Yamashita."

"..."

Yuna didn't say anything at first, merely looked past Yamashita with wide eyes into what she could see of the inside of the building. She realized her error fairly quickly, however, and hastily bowed, one hand down to catch her glasses in the process.

"...ah...Arigato, Yamashita-san!" she said quickly. "I-it's very nice to meet you," she managed to stammer out while stepping past the Commander into the building. Taking a moment to actually get a good look at Yamashita—she was pretty—she gave her best smile and said, "It will be an honor to work with you, Yamashita-san. I-I'm afraid I don't know a huge amount about what I need to do right off, so if you could tell me what I need to do to set up, that would be nice." The girl paused.

"...and also, how the plays will work...? I'm not the best actor..." Yuna was glancing around the hall of the building, fiddling with her glasses. It probably said a great deal about her that she wasn't that worried about the fighting.

Squee!

Meiling hops out of her car, grabbing her luggage on the way out. Today was the day! She gets to meet one of the most famous women alive, Kirie Yamashita, and her new commander! Honestly, she has no idea WHY she was chosen for the Kagekidan, a Chinese girl who wasn't even very adept at speaking Japanese. But, she was glad. Miss Yamashita must be so strong, so elegant, to be chosen as the commander! Her career was amazing, one of the top of her class while in training, and she was so smart... Aah, she must be a wonderful woman!

How should I dress, though? Would they have a uniform? Most likely not, given that they also have to act and sing... But surely, she could have picked something better, she thinks. After all... An Indigo, flowered Chesongam? Really? This is Japan... No one wears thing like that here... Are the guards staring at her? She sighs, and walks on past, into the Theatre. "Ni Hao Ma!" She calls out in Chinese, before attempting a more typical Japanese greeting. "Ohiyo!" She yells out, before asking, in broken Japanese. "Where Commander?" She says. She repeats the question again, more articulate, in her native Chinese. "Where is the commander?"

Kirie waited patiently for Yuna to respond to her greeting, though she could tell that the girl might be a little overwhelmed by the place. She smiled pleasantly when Yuna looked at her and hoped that'd ease some of the girl's anxiety. The captain was particularly happy that the first questions that Yuna asked were all ones she could answer pretty easily. In her training she'd worked pretty much exclusively with guys; she wasn't used to dealing with other girls quite as much. Technically she wasn't supposed to speak about the combat involved with the Kagekidan, but it was by now far less secret than it had once been.

"I imagine the first thing you should probably do is move into your room here, Weinberg-san. Better to be comfortable in your surroundings before we undertake any kind of training," she offered as advice, "Once everyone's here we can get started with things like that.. and honestly.."

She brushed a hand through her shoulder length blue locks and chuckled nervously, "I'm not exactly sure how the plays will work either.. I'm very new to this as well."

Then all of a sudden another girl arrived through the front door - weren't there supposed to be guards or something? Kirie spun around to look at the Chinese recruit and was very surprised to see her wearing a cheongsam. That hardly seemed appropriate for someone recruited to the Imperial Assault Troupe, though maybe the Imperial Floral Revue was more fitting. Kirie blinked in surprise again before slowly raising her hand in response to the question of where the commander was.

"Right here..." she spoke, then hesitated before asking, "And you are..?"

Eee! It's the commander! And she's talking, to her! "Meiling Ping." She says, smiling and offering a hand. "Do you speak Chinese?" She says, in Chinese of course. "Can't speak Japanese good..." She adds, in Japanese. "Sorry, I'm sure now that I'm in the country, I'll pick it up quick." Is her next phrase, apologetic, and Chinese. "Nice to meet you!"

"A pleasure to meet you, miss," Yamashita reciprocated, then carefully took the Chinese girl's hand and shook it firmly. She paused in thought when the girl spoke in Chinese a couple of times, then shook her head slowly. What she did know in Chinese couldn't be repeated in pleasant company. She then asked in heavilly accented English, "Do you speak English?"

Meiling nods, smiling. "A little, yes... My father was American." She replies, in English. "Not Well, though..." She adds, looking apologetic. She shakes Ms. Yamashita's hand firmly. Nice grip... She thinks, before adding "I hope to learn Japanese..."

Aaah... So these are the other people she will be working with... She looks at the other two girls. "Nice to meet you!" She repeats, in all three languages. "I hope to have fun while working with you!"

As Bella approached her destination, she couldn't help but notice the pair of soldiers whom were noticably trying to appear impressive to her. Bella thought that she should make a good first impression to these men in uniform, but she'd spent most of her life overseas, and didn't know the native tongue. Pulling out a translating device that her daddy bought her, she typed out a few quick sentences that she thought would be suitable.

"Hello, gentlemen. Today is a lovely day, is it not? Now, if you excuse me, I have business with the Imperial Floral Revue. Farewell, and have a nice day."

...Is what she wanted to say. However, she accidentally clicked the wrong buttons and translated the message to German, and then Spanish, and then a few other languages. In the end, her efforts to translate the message properly without having to retype it led to her saying (roughly) this:

"Call good to with nonexistent? Is it be. Am I I friendly with Imp in the case of an excuse? It is with the color of the magazine. A pretty thing is to leave-taking, them."

Not really caring what the soldiers' reactions were, she walked right past them and entered the theatre. Noticing that there were already a few ladies there, she decided to wait until their current discussion was over before introducing herself, wondering which one she'd have to suck up to in order to get a starring role in the first production.

"Well, you certainly are energetic," Kirie remarked in Japanese with a slightly anxious smile as the Chinese girl responded. Having someone to translate could be helpful. One of her aids might speak Chinese but they were still nowhere to be seen.

She was about to suggest they go on a tour of the Imperial Grand Theater when she noticed a third girl had arrived. Immediately the commander turned to look the new girl over. Kirie's first reaction was that the girl was actually pretty young to be recruited for the Teikoku Kagekidan. Then again the last one had recruited a nine year old French girl, so maybe this wasn't so out of place after all. Pinning an exact age on this girl would be hard and the one in the dossier could be totally off. Still Kirie had a job to do so she looked to Bella and smiled (still anxiously) to the newest arrival, who'd left the guards totally baffled.

"Eh.. hello, miss. I'm Kirie Yamashita.. can I help you?" she asked.

Fights? Plenty. Income? Promising.

And that's why Ho Tsingwun, a traveling martial artist who is always seeking greater power, decided to join the Imperial Floral Combat Troupe.

What, acting? Had anyone ever mentioned that to her?

Well, never mind.

Standing in the center of the hustling, bustling Teito, Tsingwun rubbed the back of her neck, suddenly unsure of her previous decision. Braving a whole new country might be thoughtless as seen to many, but she considers it a perfect opportunity to polish her new discovered strength.

Come on! It's no big deal, you'll pull through.

Ignoring the few strands of black hair on her tanned skin, Tsingwun kept walking. Thanks to her long legs, she can cover amazing distance in moderate pace, and thus reached her destination without breaking a sweat.

Upon being spoken to in English, Bella felt relieved; it would've been horrible to spend the entire day using that translator gizmo whenever she wanted to open her mouth. She'd taken a few classes in Japanese before coming over, but trusted the gadget more than herself...and looking back to those soldiers, that was saying something.

"Ah, good; ya speak English. Name's Isabella Prestissimo, but you can call me Bella. I'm here because my daddy bought me a position on the team. I'm really interested in the acting aspect of the job, but even though I'm young, I can handle as much bloodshed as any of the guys patrollin' this place. Pardon how sappy this'll sound, but I'm honoured to be a part of the team, and I'll try not to let any of ya down," Bella told the lady, bowing at the end for good measure. Bowing was a universal sign of respect, right?

Bella then noticed a lady with muscles entering the building, and stepped aside for her. "'Sup? You in the Imperial Floral Revue too?"

Tsingwun stopped to look at the girl. She was petit, with thick, wavy blond hair reaching her waist. Albeit very young, her delicate features has revealed what she would become in the future. How was she capable of walking here wearing that absurdly fancy dress?

She's not joining the combat troupe, is she?

"Yeah." Tsingwun thumb-pointed herself, "Hi, this is Ho Tsingwun. And you are?"

Shoot! How do you address yourself in Japanese again?

Yuna had taken a brief step back at all the new arrivals, her eyes rather wide under her glasses. She had meant to ask Yamashita-san some questions, but she seemed occupied at the moment...

The dark-skinned girl's ears perked up when she heard English being spoken. She turned to the girl speaking it—were all of these girls models or something?—and gave her a shy smile.

"/Ah, you speak English too. Hello. I'm Yuna Weinberg.../" She trailed off, fiddling with her glasses and glancing back at the occupied Yamashita-san. Maybe she wouldn't have to act much, if all these other prettier girls were there to take center stage.

Yuna glanced around at the group of people who had gathered. So these were her teammates, huh? She hoped they were friendly—although she had to admit they all did seem nice.

/Auntie would tell me to display some Harlem spirit...but.../ Yuna fidgeted, unsure of what to do.

"Oh yes, Ms. Prestissimo. You certainly have the confidence needed to succeed on the stage," Kirie remarked as the young lady spoke to her in English. Admittedly Kirie was pretty sharp with her own English but it was still hard to follow a foreigner when they spoke so quickly. She managed to do so somehwow, and the girl did bow after she'd spoken. With the sudden arrival of yet another woman Kirie was feeling a little overwhelmed suddenly; she'd expected to have time to talk to each girl individually. Instead she now found herself facing all at once!

For good measure she added, "But to succeed in performances as well as a unit, we're going to have to make a joint effort. It's not enough to have strong individuals."

Just then she noticed yet another young lady out of the corner of her eye; this time though it was someone whom she'd met before. One of the assistants who'd conveniantly gone missing just as the first of the new team members began to arrive. Kirie wasted no time in waving at the girl who at first didn't seem to see the captain. More incessant waving finally got the rather plainly and effeminately dressed brunette to come over to the group. Relieved to have backup for dealing with processing, Kirie looked to the group and smiled more cheerfully.

"Ladies, this is my assistant Yuri Takano. If you have any questions and I'm not around Ms. Takano will be able to assist you," Kirie announced in English, that being the most common language it seemed. She then added, "I'll need to see each of you individually today, but until then Yuri will show you to your rooms and answer any further quesitons you may have."

Then turning to Yuna she asked, "Weinberg-san, would you accompany me to my office?"

Yuna's head jerked up as she heard her name called.

"Ah! Y-yes Yamashita-san!" she said quickly, pushing her glasses back. She gave an apologetic smile and bow to the other girls—with an apology to the one she had spoken to—and rushed to follow Yamashita.

As she walked behind the blue-haired commander, Yuna didn't say much. She was too busy looking around the Revue building. In one corner of her mind she wondered whether she'd see a picture of the New York Kagekidan—but probably not. This was Japan, after all, not America.

After a few moments of silence, interrupted only by the tapping of feet on tiles, Yuna finally spoke up.

"Ah...Yamashita-san? Or should it be Commander Yamashita...Anyway, what did you need to talk with me about...?"

Oh boy, how great.

Not until Tsingwun's future captain delivered a speech did she take notice of her. Kirie, which was what Tsingwun believed to be the lady's name, was dressed in a sharp army uniform that screamed for her attention.

And she must be pretty snapped.

Tsingwun sighed and ruffled her black hair. Maybe what the old man had said about her was true- she really should keep an eye on the people around her who cannot be sparred with.

Oh, goody; Bella's co-stars...er, comrades, had some knowledge on the language she was familiar with. Admittedly, the person with the greatest language problems was herself, but at least there was a middle ground to start from. That Yuna chick certainly seemed like someone she could have a decent conversation with...

Turning her attention to the here and now, Bella raised her arm as if she was in elementary school, hoping to catch the attention of the lady that Kirie left them with. "Oy, Ms. Tanako! Nice to meet ya, 'n all that. So, pardon me for asking, but what kinda background do ya come from? You the 'work your way from the ground up' type, or was it more of a 'luck, charm, and good looks' thing? In my case, my daddy's money was a big factor, but I'd like to think that the guys in charge saw some natural talent in me as well."

When the youngest girl motioned for attention Yuri Takano nodded and listened to what she was being asked. While more confident in her English capabilities the speed with which Bella spoke was troublesome even for her. That combined with her accent meant that Yuri needed a few extra moments to process the question. It seemed like a strange question but once she thought she understood it she smiled as she began to respond.

"It's no trouble. I was actually employed by the Grand Theater in Shibuya before the government contacted me about the opportunity to work here. So I suppose it was simply a combination of luck and hard work that got me here," she remarked cheerfully.

Meanwhile Kirie waited until they were out of earshot of the other girls before she even began to consider what she'd ask Yuna. Where to start was a better question. Plenty of queries entered her mind but what order to put them was of great concern to her. She was the commander, she had to make sure to keep her girls happy and that meant not upsetting them on the first day. Best to start with something easy and work your way from there she supposed. So lost in contemplation had she been that by the time she was about to ask Yuna her first question that the girl beat her to the punch. Since they'd arrived at Kirie's office the commander propped the door open and motioned for Yuna to step inside.

"Officially, Captain Yamashita is the proper term. Personally you may call me Yamashita if you wish," she remarked as she stepped inside as well. On the wall were pictures of other Kagekidan units - Paris and New York were both present - as well as a new one that had been forming in Berlin.
