Awesome, but Impractical > Boring, but Practical, at least when it comes to this. There is a reason I am against going for normal guns.
I'm sorry, but history proves it impractical. The Japanese invented it in WW 2. They abandoned it because it was impractical. Please note two things, the blade was smaller IRL, and these were the guys who built a huge ass carrier/battleship when they could've built several, more easily defended carriers, which they desperately needed.
Nothing wrong with Lightning's. It's just that Squall's seems to be the issue. Despite the suggested world being FFIX.
Also, we're going to a fantasy world with fantasy characters. Why should impracticality matter? The Buster Sword is impractical, but I highly doubt anyone would care if given the chance to wield it.

Look, Impractical things will get you killed in combat. If anything, Awesome But Practical is the best solution.
GCR, maybe you should drop it. I mean, it's not like this game is a bastion of realism anyway. Sure, when it actually contributes and enrichens the experience then I'm all for realism. In this case, though... I'll take my enchanted Sword of +10 Dragon Slaying, thanks* .
Locking you up on radar since '09And I'll take my M 4 A 1 Carbine, which can hit and kill a target a good few hundred meters away, and if worst come to worst, can be used as a club.
Note how small that page is, GCR, compared to its impractical counterpart.
And, as Flanker has pointed out, this is not realistic. The characters include a talking rabbit and two people from Blaz Blue, not to mention that the whole impetus for the plot is that a virtually omnipotent girl is lonely and wants to go explore with people.
Oh, there's no means by which you can replenish ammunition, by the way. >_>
