Basically, a huge Marionette setup from a crane. They were originally actually going to use a radio controlled bike, but it fell over and broke on the first take.
They were also never completely happy with it, which is why there’s an even bigger bicycle scene in Great Muppet Caper

Yeah, as I mentioned in the Disney Thread earlier, it's kind of my all consuming special interest currently, so I could infodump about it nearly all day if you let me.

Things are different now then when they first took the deal though. Sesame Street is in a much better place financially than they were when they first made the switch, and can more or less hold its own.
they’re even doing a limited run Sesame Street musical with real puppet characters.
