Welcome to Year 1. You have stepped into a world where modern technological democracies exist next to medieval kingdoms. A world that is built by the rulers of said nations. Because of this, there's a ton of room for GOOD roleplaying.*

The Map

Here's the signup thread for the nation simulation game I've been talking about on the Yack Fest. The condensed rules are:

The full rules are:

Joining the Game

To join the game, use this signup sheet:

Country Name

''Link to flag (optional)

Leader: Leader name goes here

History: A short paragraph detailing your nation's history. Please don't make it longer than 50 or so words.

Claims: Link to a map showing your claims. Note that you can only claim three connected territories. (Note: the country in the link is a sample nation and you are free to claim in that area)

As for theme, anything goes. (Daleks? Zombies? Ponies? Why not?) Just try not to be too overpowered.

The Rules

Although I stated above that this is a simplified version of IOT, the rules are probably much more elaborate than a typical roleplay. Please do not be frightened off by them, as they are easier in practice than on paper.

House Rules

  • Do not flame, troll, or personally insult any other player OOC or IC. At all. You may comment on certain things negatively, but don't take it further than that.
  • Stay on topic. Make sure all comments are relevant to the fictional world of the current IOT and have nothing to do with your personal religious/political beliefs.
  • Your posts should actually consist of something relevant to your nation and not just one-liner comments. Do not spam.
  • Long diplomatic discussions belong to the discussion thread and private messaging, not the Game Thread.
  • No powergaming. By definition, powergaming is making your country surpass every other country by all terms including armed forces, technology, etc.
  • The GM is supreme. He reserves the right to change game rules, ignore or modify orders, impose restrictions on players, disband player nations, and so on.
  • Above all else, RESPECT THY FELLOW FORUMERS.

I'll usually warn players first if they break the rules. If they break the rules repeatedly, then I'll apply this:

  • 1st Strike: Player is suspended from the game for one turn.
  • 2nd Strike: Player is suspended from the game for three turns.
  • 3rd Strike: Player nation dissolved, and the player banned from ever rejoining.

I reserve the right to ignore this policy for players who really piss me off, and kick them out of the game instantly.

Inactive players (AWOL for more than 3 turns) risk facing the Wrath of the GM (Wo G) ie having their nation disbanded. These players can rejoin the game, but their old territories won't be restored to them; they'll start off with 3 claims like every new player.

The Actual Rules

  • Updates are unpredictable, but I will never make an update within 48 hours of a previous one. Please try and submit orders within 48 hrs of an update.
  • Orders are exactly what they sound like, posts that explain what your country's actions will do this turn. Orders are written in Blue and bold as to distinguish them from GM actions.
  • Your country produces THREE Expansion Points (XP) per turn. Claiming a territory costs 1 XP, while a small island (e.g. Lesbos, but not Sicily) costs .5 XP. XP cannot be traded.
    • You can only claim territories that are directly ajoining you or are on the coast.
    • If there are competing claims, discuss it among yourselves or ask me to solve it via the RNG.
    • When claiming a territory, please link to a map showing the territories you are claiming, preferably with the claimed territories in a lighter shade than the colour you normally use for your country.
  • The "currency" of the game are Leadership Points (LP). 1 province produces 1 LP. You may gift as many LP as you wish to another player.
    • You CANNOT bank LP. You get n LP per turn and that is it. You cannot spend LP not used in the previous update.
  • Do not confuse XP with LP, and vice versa.
  • War: Combat is decided by a roll of the RNG from 1-10 with 1 per each army/navy.
    • You must publicly declare war.
    • Armies cost 1 LP and are used to attack other provinces. As mentioned above, each army is 1 RNG roll.
    • Any army not used in attacking is used to defend if you're attacked.
    • Navies cost 5 LP. You can only attack non-ajacent coastal provinces if you have at least 1 navy.
    • 1 Navy can transport 5 armies, so if Germany invades Yorkshire with 10 armies, he'll need 2 navies to do so.
    • If you control Andalusia/Morocco, Mezzogiorno/Epirus, Denmark/Scania or Thrace ([[http://tinypic.com/r/2zf1k07/5 reference), you can control a strait. If you have at least 1 navy, you can blockade the Mediterranean/Adriatic/Baltic/Black Sea for a specific opponent, meaning that player cannot claim territories bordering that body of water if they have no territories in that body of water (or vice versa). Note that you could control only 1 side of the strait and still blockade that opponent.
    • Naval combat works the same as land combat.

So, any takers?

Interested. Will look over the rules and sign up in a bit.

Also preemptively picking Italy. At least I think the boot is Italy.

Edit: Whatever, taking the countries already highlighted.

Edit 2:
Country: Metropolis
Theme: Superheroes
Leader: Frank Berkowitz
History: No one knows why, but Metropolis has always been home to many superheroes. Maybe it's something in the water. Recently, the leader, Frank Berkowitz has decided he wants to expand, and begun an aggressive campaign against the neighboring countries.

Can you at least link to a map showing your claims?

Simply copy the map and put it into paint, remove the sample nation, fill in two connected territories with a colour of your choice, save it, upload it onto your favourite image hosting site, and post the link here. Am I completely missing the point?

  • Country: Worker's Republic of Norway.
  • Theme: Modernized, sci-fi commies. Expect Soviet-style espionage and subversion, Super Soldiers and mad science galore. Also prepare for plenty of jackboots, flight jackets, trenchcoats and many a Commisar Cap.
  • Leader: Krigkommissar (Commissar of War) Sigrún Vogel.
  • History: Bled dry after a long war, the workers in Norway rioted, overthrowing the monarchy and temporarily establishing a communist Utopia. Unfortunately, a few decades later, a new war thrust the Navy into political prominence. They're still commies and they still celebrate a secular, egalitarian and hedonistic way of life... but they're extremely jingoistic, planning to subvert or conquer the entire Northern Sea coast for the cause of communism.
  • Territories: http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/256/maplv.png/
  • Claims: Real-world Sweden and Iceland.

The Pact of Camelot

Leader: a co-operative between three leaders: King Lear of England, Duke William of Normandy and Grand Councillor Pwyll but they will eventually have a singular leader in form of King Arthur once he returns in Britain’s hour of need.

History: Forged after Arthur’s death, this alliance united Middle England, Wales and Normandy as a single power, a kingdom, and democratic socialist and military governed states accordingly. They seek to unite the British Isles under peace but William desire the pact to extent across all of Europe... an imperial desire?

Claims: here

Theme: The nation is basically a melting pot of British culture, with fantasy emerging alongside developing technology. The provinces may act as simple states that are part of the pact... presuming they were gained peacefully of course.

Mithrim Triumphant

Leader: Alexander Curufinwë

History*

: After the Fourth Age, a relatively small population of more-or-less elves (mostly elf, some human blood, all immortal), all born after the exile, returned to Middle-Earth in search of glory, evoking the memory of Fëanor. They returned to a land much changed from their ancestors' memories; in particular, bladed weapons no longer constituted the pinnacle of military technology, and when they appeared out of nowhere in particular in the middle of the Atlantic they found themselves relatively soon accosted by a lot of very large ships made entirely of metal. After much entertaining incredulity on all sides, the elves ended up occupying smallish pieces of northern Scotland by default, it having been the first land they saw. They attracted various immigrants from random places, mostly in pursuit of knowledge of the strange artifacts now commonplace. Then being in the middle of a rather nasty war, the government that theoretically claimed control over those areas had little time to spare for a lot of strange apparitions that certainly did not seem as much of a threat as certain ambitious occupants of the Continent next door. Therefore, when the elves began quietly assimilating chunks of land, they did not take any notice until Continental wars had been resolved, at which point they found themselves staring at a new power in control of large portions of their northern territory and forted in quite securely using mixtures of then-modern technology and lots of clever, quasi-magical, pretty-but-very-functional impossibilities in true Fëanorian style. Neither side really wishing for war at that point—Great Britain being tired to the bone of it, and the elves knowing that a concerted effort would destroy them—treaties were made that allowed all to save face, while leaving the elves in de facto control of a sovereign nation made up of some of the less useful bits of what used to be Scotland. Their position more or less secure, the elves then proceeded to reacquaint themselves with the world of Men at great speed. Then more stuff happened that I'm not going to go into right now.

Claims: Here, with all other claims so far (dark blue in Scotland).

Country Name: Cyber Zone

Link to flag (optional): http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/507/cyberwall2010.jpg/

Leader: Cyber Controller

History: A Cyberman ship crashed to Earth in Germany twenty years previously. After defeating the hostile inhabitants, scientists began to reverse engineer new technology from the crashed ship using existing materials. The result was a cyborg that instantly connected with the AI aboard the crashed ship. Taking over the construction line, the ship used the resources available to Germany to create a new army of Cybermen, capable of conquering the world. As of yet the Cyber legions have been unable to repair their ship, but this is merely a matter of when rather than if.

Each province produces 1 LP, which you can trade to other players. You can only use them to build armies and navies, though. I'm thinking of adding espionage.

Can I suggest TP (Trade Points)? You earn these by signing trade agreements with countries? They will have to follow sea or overland route. These points could then upgrade armies or navies, so a TP can give a boost (probably +1) to the RNG score.

It would probably just be redundant with LP. I'll try to work your suggestions in regardless, though.

Let me explain then.

When you open a trade agreement with a country, you will recieve x number of TP. You can use these to buff armies of navies within your territory. Wther it's universal or not is the question. But it also sorta of represent technology improving.

I think I'll just stick with LP, thank you. But I've been thinking that a trade agreement will increase your income by n LP. But thank you for the suggestions.
