I've noticed that an amazingly small amount of people know who did this song. It was, of course, the Animals, proven by the very distinct vocals even ignoring all other factors. So why is it that people don't know who did it?

Because it's one of those songs that's been covered many many times.

It also seems like the Animals aren't really that well known today.

Also, technically, they didn't create it. It's a cover of a folk song, authorship unknown.

I heard that the Animals were covering the version recorded by Bob Dylan, who himself was covering a version by a folk singer named Dave Van Ronk. Or maybe it was Woody Guthrie, I can't remember.

In any case, the Animals version is best for Eric Burdon's vocals and Alan Price's Hammond playing.

Yeah, theirs is the version you hear all the time, but it's one of those traditional folk songs where no one's really sure who actually wrote it. Not sure how accurate it is, but on the Covered Up page there's an amusing story of how when Bob Dylan started using Dave Van Ronk's arrangement, Van Ronk had to stop playing it live because people thought he was ripping off Bob Dylan, but then Bob Dylan had to stop playing it because people thought he was ripping off the Animals.

[up] Covering (even if in the same style), ripping off, same thing, right?

Also, ninja'd hard.

Insert witty and clever quip here. My page, as the database hates my handle.

Yeah, it's a traditional - but we can safely say that in days of old, it sounded nothing like The Animals' version:

To the best of my knowledge, the Animals came up with the recognisable chord progression and melody which have been used in all later versions.
