X-Men In General

Go To

This thread's for all of the X-Men comics and spin-offs (X-Force, X-Factor, New Mutants etc.), whether they're decades old or brand new.

  • Apart from the main Marvel Universe titles, Ultimate X-Men, X-Men 2099, X-Men "What If?" stories, crossovers, guest appearances in other books, Alternate Universe tales and things like Marvel's manga adaptations are all on-topic here.
  • X-Men 'family' books are on-topic (as are their own crossovers, guest appearances etc.) - e.g. Wolverine, Deadpool, Ms. Marvel and Cable.
  • Characters and comics that originated in X-Men and its related books but are no longer connected to the franchise are not on-topic, unless you're discussing historical connections and crossovers. If in doubt, check before you write a long post. If this isn't the right place, there's a more general Marvel Comics thread which covers them.

Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about their X-Men related stories here.

Discussions that are only about X-Men adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.

Please follow the spoiler policy rules - tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics. When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

    Original OP
Okay, it seems to me that the thread on "X-Men: Schism" has run its course, and since everyone seems to be commenting on how the conversation is talking about general parts of the franchise, I guess I should start a thread talking about all that.

I have to say that the X Men franchise has been going on for decades. Maybe not as many as the Superman franchise has, but it still has quite a number to it.

One thing I am certain of is that the franchise seems to be subverting Status Quo Is God in recent years. Magneto and Professor Xavier seem to be fading into the background, with Cyclops and Wolverine taking their places. A lot of villains associated to the X-Men have been killed off and have actually stayed dead so far.

All this gives me the general impression that the franchise is trying to reinvent itself. Do you think that's what's going on here?

Wow, I hope that reveal was intentional!

Kate Pryde as Emma's choice harkens back to Astonishing X-Men, no?

I thought Moira was a shoe-in for this council (unless they don't want to reveal her status to more people??), her non-appearance in this incarnation of Krakoa is becoming odder by the moment.

Also with all this talk of copies of the mutant mind and the variations Cerebro has, I wonder if Xavier has to use a similar method to sift through the sheer amount of minds like the X-Men of Year 100 used to find the Nimrod data.

I saw speculation that Moira could use the pods and the Five to cheat the life limit, which would essentially serve as her "eleventh life" or possibly more, so I wonder if anyone else thinks this is viable because I have no clue if her powers would allow this.

Hmm. Technically Moira's power means that whenever she dies, she reverts back to the womb. If she's a Pod Clone, then she might revert back to when she's in the pod, meaning she can then control when she comes back, rather than have it be her entire lifetime. But then, of course, there would be two Moira's. If the other Moira died, she would revert back to her original life and either live it again or die before she was thirteen.

I'm predicting that the title for House of X #6, "I Am Not Ashamed of What I Am" probably comes from Moira.

Someone pointed out in the comments section of the POX 5 annotations that in light of the Year 1000 reveals in POX 5, this passage from the Chimera infograph in POX 1 is probably wayyyyy more relevant than it seemed at first glance (bolding added by me for emphasis).

However, the fourth generation of Sinister mutants suffered a systemic failure. The entire batch of these Omega-based, Chimera mutants was produced with a corrupted hive mind....They eventually committed mass suicide, collapsing Mars, the Sinister pits, and themselves into a self-singularity.

One argument I keep hearing frim some is how Krakoa is like a cult? To which I have to ask what book were you reading?

I think they mean: how is it like a cult and not like pretty much every other religion?

Maybe because they're not forcing their beliefs upon anyone and giving mutants a choice to live on Krakoa.

Maybe if they didn't parade around Scott and the other's naked bodies like they were sacred objects of worship and weren't chanting like a cult of personality, I'd be less concerned. Nevermind treating The Five as beings of reverence. Is it too much to ask that everyone just act like a normal society instead of a hyper-obsessed cult or religious sect?

And speaking as a Christian, while I don't have a problem with religious beliefs, I'm still a bit iffy on organized religion.

[up][up]At the very least they don't have to act like a cult or religious sect. Because right now it's teetering dangerously close to either.

[up] Yeah, how dare they celebrate the mutants who have essentially helped them overcome death and provide them with a way of bringing back their unjustly killed loved ones. And how dare they also celebrate the revived mutants who gave their lives to destroy the genocide machine.

[up]They can celebrate them without going "I KNOW HIM!" or " WHAT IS HE?!" and everyone chanting "MUTANT!" Just announce they're alive and have a normal celebration.

[up][up] Starting to think we're getting close to some kind of fallacy here. From I'm gathering isn't that they're being celebrated, but are being held in reverence.

[nja]'d I guess.

I mean, when you take into context that they’re a minority group fighting back against genocide and actually reversing its effects, I can’t blame them for making a show out of it. Like, this is a big fucking deal.

I just think people are being a little too jumpy about all of this.

[up]The problem is doing things like that risks creating a cult of personality or instilling a sense of intense religious devotion. They're cultivating a sheer blinding loyalty to their ideals, which if taken too far could end up being incredibly dangerous. If Magneto or some other extremist told them to, say, wage war on humanity? There's a chance they may actually do it. No questions asked.

[up][up]I'm not saying that Magneto or whoever would give the order. Just that there's the risk of the Krakoans becoming so blindly devoted they would carry such an order out without hesitation. Or anything comparable without bothering to think if they should actually do it.

[up]Again, I am not saying that someone would give such an order, and I'll keep saying that as many times as I have to. That is NOT what this is about. This is about cultivating a cult of personality that woukd carry such orders out without hesitation if they were given. Regardless of whether they were actually ordered or not.
