X-Men In General

Go To

This thread's for all of the X-Men comics and spin-offs (X-Force, X-Factor, New Mutants etc.), whether they're decades old or brand new.

  • Apart from the main Marvel Universe titles, Ultimate X-Men, X-Men 2099, X-Men "What If?" stories, crossovers, guest appearances in other books, Alternate Universe tales and things like Marvel's manga adaptations are all on-topic here.
  • X-Men 'family' books are on-topic (as are their own crossovers, guest appearances etc.) - e.g. Wolverine, Deadpool, Ms. Marvel and Cable.
  • Characters and comics that originated in X-Men and its related books but are no longer connected to the franchise are not on-topic, unless you're discussing historical connections and crossovers. If in doubt, check before you write a long post. If this isn't the right place, there's a more general Marvel Comics thread which covers them.

Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about their X-Men related stories here.

Discussions that are only about X-Men adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.

Please follow the spoiler policy rules - tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics. When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

    Original OP
Okay, it seems to me that the thread on "X-Men: Schism" has run its course, and since everyone seems to be commenting on how the conversation is talking about general parts of the franchise, I guess I should start a thread talking about all that.

I have to say that the X Men franchise has been going on for decades. Maybe not as many as the Superman franchise has, but it still has quite a number to it.

One thing I am certain of is that the franchise seems to be subverting Status Quo Is God in recent years. Magneto and Professor Xavier seem to be fading into the background, with Cyclops and Wolverine taking their places. A lot of villains associated to the X-Men have been killed off and have actually stayed dead so far.

All this gives me the general impression that the franchise is trying to reinvent itself. Do you think that's what's going on here?

I really liked Remender's idea of pushing mutant acceptance by having prominent businesspeople make mutant-focused product lines, like Janet Van Dyne's fashion company.

Shame Rick was less interested in this and more is having his protagonists argue in circles.

Circles are the perfect shape for arguments.

They never end.

In regards to the video game idea...someone has to say Xmen...welcome to DIE!

....I actually don't know where that's from.

I wonder how the X-Men adaptations would've turned out if Pryde of the X-Men took off.

[up] Well, the movies probably would've had an Australian playing Wolverine, maybe someone like Hugh Jackman, wouldn't that have been crazy?

That, or they would've cast a Canadian actor who put on an Australian accent.

Um, they do realize that what X-Man is trying to do is shown in a negative light, right? We aren't supposed to be agreeing with him — and he's the one who called it a "fake house of worship." (Also: didn't other houses of worship disappear, too?)

IIRC this guy is a notorious fundie, though I may have confused him with someone with a similar name.

I really hope they don't ignore the ending to X-Men: Red — the part where Cassandra Nova is given empathy is so great, she shouldn't really be a villain anymore.

It's cool that Karma will be in UXM, but I still refuse to forgive Rosenberg for what he did to Karma in New Mutants: Dead Souls.

He took a story that should have been about her, and kept her almost entirely out of it. Her only real role in her own story was a few pages in the final issue, where she did some full-on supervillain shit. She murdered her own brother in order to re-absorb his soul, not to save lives, but because she wanted to. And she did it by mind-controlling her friend into committing the murder. A friend with a traumatic past involving people trying to control her and force her to commit terrible acts.

I will never stop being angry about it. Tran's return should have been all about Karma. He's her brother. She's the one who originally killed him, in order to save lives. The idea that he's been subtly influencing and changing her over the years? That was a natural story hook, one we didn't get to actually see, because Rosenberg instead just said he'd been influencing her. We could've had a story where Karma - whose power is terrifying and intrusive - starts to realize it's been getting used on her, letting the full horror of what her power does sink in on her. But nope, gloss it all over. And a story where Karma, free of Tran's influence, feels incomplete, feels like she isn't herself, and is desperate to get him back? That'd be some fascinating shit. But, again, glossed over in a few lines of dialogue. Which ends, not with her managing, through force of will, to start down the road to recovery, but with her forcing her friend to commit a fucking murder so she can get another hit.

So, yeah, I will never forgive Rosenberg for it. Dead Souls was a well-told story, but it wasn't the story it should have been, and it actively prevents the story we should have gotten from actually being told.

So this is the new lineup for Cyclops and Wolverine's team. (I'm guessing this is just for Age of X-Man, post-Age of X-Man, Jean might be leading a different team.) Cyclops. Wolverine. Mirage. Magik. Havok. Multiple Man. Karma. Banshee. Wolfsbane. Hope.

First thought: hey, the Summers brothers! And their granddaughter/grandniece!

Second thought: hey, wait, I see both Havok and Banshee from Rosenberg's Astonishing run, as well as Multiple Man from Rosenberg's Multiple Man mini-series, and Mirage, Magik, Wolfsbane, and Karma from Rosenberg's New Mutants mini. Have all of Rosenberg's mini-series been leading to this team? Or is he just using his favorite characters?

Third thought: ten characters, five male, five female, that's interesting. Only two people of color (Mirage and Karma), though.

Fourth thought: wait, Mirage still doesn't have any mutant powers, only Valkyrie powers. Eh, still a badass. Her codename doesn't make any sense anymore, though.

Fifth thought: can we please have Multiple Man check in with his wife and child, please? I know he doesn't remember them because he came from before, but I would still like assurances they are okay.

I don’t think Matthew Roseburg has written anything truly remarkable, just a cursory look at his bibliography, it looks like he’s So Okay, It's Average. Nothing about this new team excites me, and neither does the new alt universe stuff.

[up][up] I'm not sure what in the article is supposed to contradict anything I said in my post. Dead Souls was still a mini that took a Karma story and told it in a way that minimized her role in it. And she still mind-controlled her friend into killing her brother so she could absorb his soul, which is some fucked-up supervillain shit to do.

It's kinda hard to be excited that the guy who did that is also the one who's going to be doing her (presumed) redemption story. Especially considering she's one character among 10, two of the others are the most over-hyped characters in the entire franchise, and at least two others have their own character arcs that Rosenberg is already in the middle of. So yippee, Karma will get a couple panels every couple months to say she feels bad about what happened.

Rosenberg's a good writer. But he pissed me all the way off with his handling of Karma in Dead Souls, and I don't trust him with her in UXM, and it'll take A LOT for me to be convinced in regards to anything he does with her.

Edit: And on a totally unrelated note to that, I wonder if Rosenberg will be the one to finally have Illyana come out as a lesbian. Everyone knows she's a lesbian, so let her be a lesbian, Marvel.

So Cyclops and Logan leading a team together?

Perhaps symbolic of them recognizing that their previous pissing contest did far more harm to mutants than any enemy ever has.

Huh. That's rather cool of Logan.

I mean, he's still an overhyped asshole, but that's why those moments where people remember he's a bit more than that are so important.

I think maybe it was Bendis who stated that they wrote Illyana as asexual, mainly because she had been aged up and down so much so that they didn't actually know what her real age was. In any case, I think it would be interesting to have an Illyana who is asexual, but not aromantic.

[up][up][up][up][up] Ah, OK, gotcha.

[up] Yeah, Bendis said he was uncomfortable getting into anything sexual with Illyana because he had no idea what age she was. As far as ace Illyana goes, meh, much as I want more ace rep in comics, I think Illyana's arc in the original New Mutants was all about a closeted lesbian trying to hide it by pretending to be normal. Like, her whole thing was about being "wicked" and "sinful." Aceys are seen as weird and broken by people who don't understand that People Are Different, but they're not seen as sinful. Early New Mutants Rahne, for example, would've been totally OK with an asexual, but a lesbian? Her fundamentalist upbringing would've been aghast at that.

There's also a history of witchcraft being associated with lesbianism. And the current association of lesbians with swords. Sword Lesbians are a thing, it's not Sword Asexuals. Asexuals get morningstars, they're Macesexuals.

So, yeah, Illyana's a lesbian.

Now Jubilee is asexual. At least in my headcanon. Biromantic asexual. And probably polyromantic, too.

I HAVE OPINIONS on the romantic and sexual lives of the X-Men! (Rogue and Gambit are heavy into kink, are both bi, and a few years into their marriage, will start engaging in swinging.)

[up]That sounds about right for Gambit and Rogue. I could definitely see Gambit as bi, though I know they won't go there. I feel that he we need more bi/pan males in the MU, Shatterstar can't carry the whole weight.
