X-Men In General

Go To

This thread's for all of the X-Men comics and spin-offs (X-Force, X-Factor, New Mutants etc.), whether they're decades old or brand new.

  • Apart from the main Marvel Universe titles, Ultimate X-Men, X-Men 2099, X-Men "What If?" stories, crossovers, guest appearances in other books, Alternate Universe tales and things like Marvel's manga adaptations are all on-topic here.
  • X-Men 'family' books are on-topic (as are their own crossovers, guest appearances etc.) - e.g. Wolverine, Deadpool, Ms. Marvel and Cable.
  • Characters and comics that originated in X-Men and its related books but are no longer connected to the franchise are not on-topic, unless you're discussing historical connections and crossovers. If in doubt, check before you write a long post. If this isn't the right place, there's a more general Marvel Comics thread which covers them.

Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about their X-Men related stories here.

Discussions that are only about X-Men adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.

Please follow the spoiler policy rules - tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics. When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

    Original OP
Okay, it seems to me that the thread on "X-Men: Schism" has run its course, and since everyone seems to be commenting on how the conversation is talking about general parts of the franchise, I guess I should start a thread talking about all that.

I have to say that the X Men franchise has been going on for decades. Maybe not as many as the Superman franchise has, but it still has quite a number to it.

One thing I am certain of is that the franchise seems to be subverting Status Quo Is God in recent years. Magneto and Professor Xavier seem to be fading into the background, with Cyclops and Wolverine taking their places. A lot of villains associated to the X-Men have been killed off and have actually stayed dead so far.

All this gives me the general impression that the franchise is trying to reinvent itself. Do you think that's what's going on here?

[up] I have something I love and something I hate about that scene.

What I love: Jean gets all worried, and Bishop just tells her to give Laura a second. He knows who she is. He knows that getting eaten is a time-honoured Wolverine strategy.

What I hate: Why wasn't she covered in gore? I remember she got eaten once during Hopeless' ANXM run, and when she cut her way free, she was drawn just covered in gore. The other characters were totally grossed out. It was great. But here, she's totally clean in the very next panel. Come on, artists, draw women covered in blood and gore and being totally disgusting. I promise, the audience will love it.

This current Uncanny run isn’t really impressing me too much. I know this is in part of TPTB taking the characters through familiar terrority again for potential new customers who skipped out on Gold/Blue/Red, goddamn I want a new story for the X-Men already.

Laura got out of the Dinosaur completely clean because Beauty Is Never Tarnished. Of course, it seems that someone forgot that this is X-23 we are talking about. She does not do "beauty".

Let's be fair, it doesn't look like UXM is re-doing Age of Apocalypse.

It's re-doing House of M, which was a counter-point to Age of Apocalypse.

Either way, yeah, nothing new. And the sub-plot with the New X-Men kids will only matter if there's actual long-term plans in place for them. Having the kids bitch about being wallpaper isn't worth doing if it ends with them going back to being wallpaper. So if they aren't part of the core cast of a new ongoing series after UXM ends, then the whole sub-plot can fuck right off.

It would be interesting of the mini-series for Age of X-Man transitioned into new X-book:

  • Marvelous X-Men = Amazing X-Men
  • Nextgen = Generation X
  • Amazing Nightcrawler = ??? Same ???
  • The X-Tremists = X-Force? or X-Factor?
  • Apocalypse and the X-Tracts = X-Factor or Excalibur?
  • Prisoner X = ???

You know, I initially supported Logan in pulling the kids off active X-person duty on the basis they'd suffered so much already.

Little did I know that would just result in them doing absolutely nothing instead. tongue

I do wish we got a new Generation X book. The last one we got was pretty damn good. (And fixed Jubilee's vampirism.)

[up][up][up] I'd have Nextgen transition to New X-Men. My preference would be Hope leading a team that includes Armour, Rockslide, Anole, Surge, Pixie, and a couple other younger X-Men who get constantly overlooked.

Hmmm, how many X-teams do we need? Uncanny X-Men, of course, and there's not a doubt in my mind that it's going to be back to nostalgia-wank bullshit that uses the classic members, with one or maybe two members created later than 1990. X-Force is relaunching, with the classic line-up, including Boom-Boom in her pretty cool skirt costume that I actually genuinely like. So what else should there be?

There should absolutely be New X-Men. A new X-Factor might not be a bad idea, actually, a team that works with the government. And I'm thinking one more team, whether it be X-Men, Astonishing X-Men, Amazing X-Men, whatever else they want to call it, that just gets caught up in the weirdest shit.

Oh shit. OH SHIT. Oh shit oh shit oh shit. Idea. A team led by Scott. A team led by Jean. A team led by Teen Cable. A team led by Hope. All of them doing their own things, finding their own ways of fighting for The Dream, sometimes working at cross-purposes, sometimes working together. Shit, give Rachel a team, too, why not?

Though aside from teams, a bigger question is who should be given X-titles to write. We already know Matthew Rosenberg is going to be the sole writer on UXM after the current event ends. Kelly Thompson's got quite a few titles already, and I'd love to see her do another X-title, but I think that'll have to wait a bit. In the meantime, LEAH FUCKING WILLIAMS, obviously, yes, let her write whatever book she wants, with whatever characters she wants, it'll be amazing. Who else? Seanan Mc Guire's good, I'd like to see her get an ongoing at Marvel, assuming she's interested. Christina Strain really impressed me on Generation X, it'd be great if she got another shot, whether another teen title or something else.

Who else would kill it on an X-title?

Tom Taylor, obviously, since he's just coming off of X-Men Red. But if we're talking dream writer? Someone whom I really want to see write an X-book but probably won't? Kelly Sue DeConnick. It's not out of the picture completely, since she's writing Aquaman for DC, but I don't know if she would want to return of Marvel.

[up] I was actually thinking of realistic choices. Like, I'd love Kelly Thompson on an X-title, but given her workload, I don't think it's likely right now. (Mr. and Mrs. X, West Coast Avengers, Jessica Jones, Captain Marvel, and I assume she's also going to do more Nancy Drew. And who knows if there might be some creator-owned stuff she wants to do, too.)

Given the reception to the one-shots Leah Williams has done, Marvel would have to be pretty pretty goddamn stupid not to give her an ongoing. She's proven quite thoroughly that she's got the chops for it. She's a hardcore X-Men fan - to the point where Marvel actually has her do Spotify playlists for various X-Men characters - with a deep passion for the characters, and she's a damned fine writer. What If: Magik and X-Men Black: Emma Frost were both insanely good, the Reje X story from the Domino Annual was pretty well-recognized as the best story included, just give her a damned ongoing already.

Leah Williams, certainly. Magdalene Visaggio — I would have her write an ongoing Dazzler book, since her Dazzler: X-Song was x-ellent (sorry). Ivan Brandon would probably be really good at a weird team book. Jody Houser would be excellent, too, especially since I think both Faith and Mother Panic have ended. Becky Cloonan, too.

Wait, hold on, I know someone who would be perfect writing a X-book: Chip Zdarsky. Sure, he's writing both Daredevil and Invaders now, but tell me he wouldn't be perfect for, like, a hilarious X-book starring all those characters you can't remember their names. And Cyclops.

I want Kelly Thompson to stay on Nancy Drew like, forever and it seems like Marvel recognizes her talent so I won't complain about her not getting another book.

Tom Taylor or Al Ewing I think would kill it on an X-Men book.

I want Al Ewing to write Immortal Hulk for a long, long time.

But also, yeah, I want him to write an X-book, because I miss his quirky team books (Captain America and the Mighty Avengers, New Avengers, US Avengers, The Ultimates). Perhaps he can finally write an Excalibur book? After all, he wrote Captain Britain and the Mighty Defenders for Secret Wars.

[up][up][up] Yeah, Mags on a Dazzler ongoing would be a treat. I so desperately want Dazzler to get another solo that combines her music career with her superhero career. Almost missing shows because she was fighting Shocker. A recording session gets attacked by Friends of Humanity, with her human bandmates helping her fight the bigots off. Ooooh, and she keeps getting sabotaged by another music studio trying to promote their own hot new mutant sensation. And the new singer's actually a big fan of Dazzler and has no idea what her manager's doing.

Can we make it like this volume of Black Canary, but where Dazzler is the lead singer of a band touring the country and they keep getting into weird hijinx along the way?

I can’t help but think that without the readers actually being able to ‘’hear’’ Allison’s music, the experience will feel somewhat hollow.

[up] Read the Jem & the Holograms comics. Comics about musicians can be done. (I'm also a big fan of Hopeless Savages, a series of graphic novels that are primarily about musicians. The most recent volume was actually about a band going on tour. There are plenty of other comics about musicians, as well.)

Music is difficult to convey in print, but it's not entirely impossible, and a comic about music is going to be more focused on the people making it, and on the obstacles in their way. I would go so far as to say you could do a long-lasting comic series about musicians that never shows a single note of music. In fact, I could envision a series about a band going on tour, and every issue ends just as they go on stage.

Edit: Another fun option would be for each issue to come with a recommended song to play while reading it, helping to set the issue's tone. There are a few writers I can definitely see doing that.
