Okay, I asked this in another forum, but apparently I can't find someone who knows the answer and can be bothered to answer, so I'm left with you guys Tv Tropes!

There's a simple question that had been bothering me for years now, about spiderman comics. I haven't actually read main spiderman comics since my elementary school (I only read ultimates and limited series for years), and back then I just didn't care about it I guess, but as an adult, it makes me wonder.

I know the difference between say, spiderman and ultimate spiderman and alternate universe stuffs. I also know the difference between various x-men titles (most of different titles are about different teams and such)

But what are the difference/purpose between various spiderman title, like The Amazing Spiderman, Spectacular Spiderman, Webs of Spiderman or whatever else they have. Since I notice that they're all about mainstream spiderman. Are they related to each others? Do people have to read all of them or they can just read one title? Basically, what's with all those titles?

Thanks before.

Well, originally it was that Spider-man was so popular that they wanted to get more cash flow than a single monthly. There's usually an explanation like Web of Spider-man is for more gritty Spidey comics or whatnot and Spectacular would be more with the Marvel universe, but usually it's just different titles.

Currently there are only two ongoings which are Amazing which is the normal one and Avenging which is 'Spider-man teams up with different avengers'. Both are pretty good. Avenging just started this week and Amazing just came off a pretty great event called Spider Island.

It was the same thing with Superman, Batman, and, to some extent...the X-Men, during the 90s.

At one point, Superman had five comics (Action Comics, Superman, Adventures of Superman, Superman: The Man Of Steel, and Superman: The Man of Tomorrow). The idea was to give the Super-fan (and believe me, their wallets had to be super) a fresh comic every week rather than every month, effectively making Superman a pseudo-weekly comic. The problem (aside from the cost) was that there was a different creative team for each book, and it's hard to coordinate.
