TVTropes builds a campaign setting!

Thanks, folks. I actually feel almost normal again, I just have a ringing in my ears and some anxiety that makes it hard to sleep. This has happened before tough, the last time it lasted a few days, so I'm confident I'll be better soon. :)

So any thoughts on me objecting to my own idea?

I think it shows you are becoming more careful and learning to work with the group, good for you! IF you decide to withdraw the proposal for now, be sure to let me know before I make the next ballot.

I don't think anything needs to be done.

Ultimately, the ability of a caster to use spells would be limited by his/her mental faculties, control over the Æther, and any number of other factors. Average Joe the Wizard isn't going to be able to pluck the spell that sent an army into the sky out of thin air and cast it, because he's just not powerful enough.

Still having some trouble sleeping. It's the tinnitus (the ringing in the ears.) But I'm almost used to it by now. I did some research and it might be unrelated to my epilepsy after all. I'll ask my doctor, my next appointment is next week anyway.

Anyway, my big problem with the worldwide-effect spells is this: much of the intrigue of colonization-based fiction comes from the isolation the colonies suffer from the mainland, due to great distances, resources, politics etc. For example, a colony might be faced with a moral choice regarding dealing with the natives, and not know what to do due because they do not have immediate contact with their superiors. Instant communication would shoot that down. Secrets and news would spread like wildfire. Think those "how movies would have been resolved if they had cell phones" videos in Youtube. So, once again I suggest we limit it somehow- requiring rare spells to access, or the use of a ley point, etc.

I don't like that at all, with all the magic we've stuffed into this setting. It be too wrong to restrict players and GM's like that, not too mention it run against everything we've done so far.

What.... the Domain Spells?

Sijo, I don't think the domain spells have anything to do with instant-speed communication (which we already said is a big no).

Alright, let's step back and do some introspection, just for a moment.

Everyone, what do you feel the setting still needs?

An established map, with countries and cultures locations, Cities states, ectra can come later. Also a map of ley lines over it with nodes. We can fill in the blanks from there.

Agreed.

Part of that is figuring out the geography.

I think I have a new idea for the Domain Spells, make a marked difference between Artificial and Natural Domain Spells and put different but greater limits on each one.

A map (of at least the established lands such as the Empires) would be a big help indeed. Isn't there some map generator online we can use?

I also think this setting needs more characters, as examples of what can be done with the races and classes. Also, more heroic characters. Hrod is fun and whatnot, but one thing people always ask is "so, who are the Good Guys here?"

I'm actually working on a character right now, to serve as an example of what the setting can do with various systems and to provide an unambiguous good guy patron for the players to interact with.

Let me rephrase that: I WAS working on a character, but I've had a rough week and my computer just destroyed an hour's worth of work and you know what fuck it.
